UTET: Avoid these common mistakes

UTET, or the Uttarakhand Teachers Entrance Test, is an entry-level but prestigious exam that attracts thousands of candidates across the country. The exam is conducted to test the eligibility of candidates for different teaching posts in government and state schools of Uttarakhand. This exam is conducted in two parts that screen and select the right candidates.

  • Level 1 of UTET is for selecting aspirants who want to teach primary classes between 1-5. 
  • Level 2 of UTET is done for selecting aspirants who want to teach classes 6-8. 

This renowned exam is held once every year for 90 minutes. It is conducted in offline mode in both English and Hindi languages. The paper has no negative marking, and one can appear for this exam several times. 

Once a candidate passes the UTET, they are screened and selected by the Uttarakhand Board Of Secondary Education. They are also provided with Teacher Eligibility Test Certificate. This certificate is valid across the state for the lifetime of a person. This certificate makes a person eligible for multiple teaching positions across the state in different settings. 

UTET Exam mistakes to avoid

To pass the exam with flying colours, you must avoid the following mistakes. 

  • Not knowing the syllabus: One basic mistake you can make as a UTET aspirant is being unaware of the complete syllabus. You must refer to the official website and go thoroughly through the syllabus of both papers. Plan out and study accordingly to avoid missing out on important topics before the exam. 
  • Avoiding previous year papers: Practice is very important for UTET. To give the exam well and perform exceptionally, you must go through the previous year’s question papers. Each year the pattern remains similar and solving a practice paper helps you keep track of your preparation and progress. Several solved papers are easily available, and you can use them to be in touch with all subjects of UTET. It will also help you understand your weak areas so that you can focus and work to get the best results.
  • Not making notes: Another common mistake to avoid when preparing for UTET is not preparing notes. Notes help in easy revision and memorisation. This is very important during exam time when you need quick access to study material. Make short bullet points and small flowcharts to have a better understanding of the UTET subjects.

UTET exam eligibility criteria

Age: UTET has minimum age criteria. You must be older than 18 and younger than 38 years to apply. 

Educational Qualification: To be eligible for appearing for the exam, you must have the following educational qualifications. 

For Paper 1, the candidates must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 50 percent marks, or
  • Be a pass 12th standard, and have a minimum training of years in elementary education under the NTEC program, or
  • Must have an HSC degree along with a relevant diploma in education

For paper 2, the candidates must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree along with a B.Ed degree. The B.Ed degree holder must have a minimum of 45 percent marks.  
  • The candidate must have an SSC degree with a minimum of 50 percent and a Bachelor’s degree of 4 years.

Exam fees

The exam is held at a decided fee. The cost incurred is for paper correction and printing. The cost for general category students is Rs. 600 for 1 paper. The fee for two papers is Rs. 1000. For the reserved categories, the fee is Rs. 300 for 1 paper and Rs. 500 for two. 

Exam syllabus

The UTET paper is based on a few subjects. Having a proper idea about the entire syllabus is advisable to score well. 

The first paper is based on-

  • Child Development and Pedagogy
  • Language-I 
  • Language-II
  • Mathematics 
  • Environmental Studies 

The second paper focuses on-

  • Child Development and Pedagogy
  • Language-I
  • Language-II
  • Mathematics and Science 
  • Social Studies.
