Section 23 of the RTE (Right To Education) Act lays down the minimum qualifications for a person expected to be appointed as a teacher to classes I to VIII in the Notifications dated 23rd August 2010 and 29th July 2011 published by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). The RTE Act provided, among other things, that one of the essential qualifications for an individual to be eligible for being employed as a teacher in any of its designated schools is that they must possess an approved degree. The NCTE recommends that the candidate pass the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), conducted by the government following the guidelines set out by the NCTE.

Below are the reasons why the TET must be included as a minimum qualification for someone to be eligible to become a teacher:

  • This will result in national standards and a benchmark for teacher quality in recruitment processes.
  • As a result, teacher education institutions would be encouraged to raise their performance standards, as would their students.
  • Also, all candidates would receive a positive message that the government pays special attention to teacher quality.

Considering that CTET exams are usually easy to moderate in difficulty, passing them isn’t that difficult. Each year, lakhs of candidates take the CTET exam. The CTET exam process is open, fair, and transparent, and it is only based on merit, capability, and intense preparation using government-issued practice material.
