Phonology

Phonology is one of the studies with various uses. It is defined as the study of speech sounds of a language or languages and the laws governing them. It is a branch of linguistics that studies the sounds and its effects. However, the meaning of the word has changed over the years. Earlier, phonology meant the learning of the sound or sign systems of any particular langugae. But now, this term may relate to any linguistic analysis that may happen at a level beneath the word. For example, syllable, onset and rime, and articulatory gestures can come under the term phonology. Moreover, all levels of language where sounds or signs are structured to convey linguistic meaning are also defined as phonology.

Sign languages are also considered a part of phonological system. This language is equivalent to the system of sounds used in spoken language. Earlier, researchers and sign language experts used a separate terminology to study the sign phonology. However, this system was discarded as the new concepts are considered to apply universally to all languages. The term phonology can be applied in more than one field. It may mean to the field of study and to the phonological system of a particular language. The word is derived from a Greek word and can be divided into two parts: phone and logy. The meaning of the word phone is voice or sound. Likewise, logy means the study of something. Together, these two words mean the study of voices. However, there are different definitions of this term according to linguistic experts.
