In the beginning years of the university, degrees used to be awarded by the Karnataka University, Dharwad, and later on by the University of Mysore. There was a short period of time from 1980 to 1993 when degrees were awarded by the Mangalore University.
The current organizational structure of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education was formed in the year 1993 when Kasturba Medical College and Manipal College of Dental Sciences were accorded the status of deemed university by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The Manipal Institute of Technology, even though an integral part of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, was not a constituent unit of the same until the year 2000.
