The history of the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) dates back to 1823. It was established by the French government in 1823; however, soon there was a need to expand this medical college. So the foundation for the new college was laid in 1956. However, it took a few years to inaugurate the new college.

The institute conducts its entrance examination for giving admission to future doctors. Candidates must appear in the JIPMER MBBS examination to get admission into the institute.
- Candidates applying for admission must be Indian nationals
- The candidate must be aged above 17 years
- Candidates must have passed/appeared in 10+2 examinations with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as their subjects
- Candidates must have scored more than 50% marks in the 10+2 examination
The exam is held in Multiple Choice Questions format. The total number of questions will be 200. Moreover, the medium of language will be English. Candidates need to answer 200 questions in 2.5 hours. For each correct answer, candidates will be awarded one mark. However, there are no penalty marks for incorrect answers and unmarked responses.
