Even though humans have been historically interested in the natural history of the animals that they found around them, and used for this knowledge to domesticate certain species. The formal study of zoology can be attributed to Aristotle. He saw animals as living organisms, and he began to study their structure and development, considering their adaptations to their surroundings and the function of each one of their parts. Even though the onset of the Early Middle Ages led to the decline of the Greek tradition of medicine which further led to the decline of scientific study in Western Europe, it continued in the medieval Islamic world. The origins of modern zoology can be traced back to the Renaissance and early modern period led by Carl Linnaeus, Robert Hooke, Charles Darwin, Gregor Mendel, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, and many others.

The study of animals has now moved on to deal with form and function, relationships between groups, behavior, and ecology. Zoology has increasingly been subdivided into disciplines such as biochemistry, classification, physiology, and evolution, The discovery of the structure of DNA by Crick and Watson in 1953 led to the realm of molecular biology opening up, leading to advances in cell biology, developmental biology, and molecular genetics.
