The Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) is a private deemed university located in the Indian state of Karnataka in the city of Manipal. The university also has campuses in 3 other places in India, namely Bengaluru, Jamshedpur, and Mangaluru. It also has 2 branches outside of the Indian subcontinent – one branch in Malaysia in the city of Malacca, as well as another in the city of Dubai. According to data from 2021, this university offers more than three hundred and fifty programs across thirty disciplines and ranks among the top 10 universities in India, currently at 7th place.
In 1953, Dr. T. M. A. Pai founded the Kasturba Medical College, the first private medical college in India, and 5 years after that, the Manipal Institute of Technology was established. In the beginning years of the university, degrees used to be awarded by the Karnataka University, Dharwad, and later on by the University of Mysore. There was a short period of time from 1980 to 1993 when degrees were awarded by the Mangalore University.
The current organizational structure of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education was formed in the year 1993 when Kasturba Medical College and Manipal College of Dental Sciences were accorded the status of deemed university by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The Manipal Institute of Technology, even though an integral part of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, was not a constituent unit of the same until the year 2000. The university has now been certified as an ISO 14001:2004 organization.
The Manipal Academy of Higher Education is currently divided into 3 main facets:
- The Faculty of Health Sciences
- The Faculty of Science, Technology & Management, and
- The Faculty of Humanities, Liberal Arts & Social Sciences
