Institute of Eminence

An Institute of Eminence, or IoE for short, is a recognition scheme for higher education institutes in India. It was set by the University Grants Commission back in 2017. The plan was meant for twenty institutions out of which 12 have already been declared an Institute of Eminence as of April 2021. The institutes that have been granted the said status get better autonomy, both in terms of administration like setting fees and academics. They are allowed to open offshore campuses and enjoy better collaborative opportunities with global universities. While public institutions can be granted up to a thousand crore rupees in funding which is equivalent to 12 billion rupees or 160 million USD, no funding is provided to private institutions. Among the universities that are publicly funded are:

  • Anna University
  • Banaras Hindu University
  • Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, Karnataka
  • Indian Institute of Technology Bombay
  • Indian Institute of Technology Delhi
  • Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur
  • Indian Institute of Technology Madras
  • Jadavpur University
  • University of Delhi
  • University of Hyderabad

Out of these, with the exception of Anna University and Jadavpur University, which are given the status of ‘action needed’, the rest of the universities have already been declared an Institute of Eminence.
