Indian Institute of Advanced Studies

Indian Institute of Advanced Studies was set up in 1964 with an aim to bring like-minded people on a similar platform and help them share their knowledge and ideas. It is a research institute situated in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. 

Indian Institute of Advanced Study was set up by the Ministry of Education, Government of India in 1964. However, the institute became fully functional from 20th October 1965. The institute has a rich history and the building was set as a home for Lord Dufferin, Viceroy of India. The time at which the Viceroy resides in that building, it was called the Viceregal Lodge. 

The building has a marvelous structure and was designed by a famous architect Henry Irwin. Later, it was developed as an educational institute. Currently, Indian Institute of Advanced Studies focuses on the following areas:

  • Humanities: Students willing to study arts and aesthetics, literature, religion and philosophy can take this stream. 
  • Social sciences: Candidates willing to research on development studies and comparative study of political institutes may take up this stream. 
  • Natural and life sciences: Future researchers who want to delve deeper on science, technology, and development can take natural and life sciences courses. 

The institute also offers fellowship programs to students. They have two programs: National Fellows and Fellows. The National Fellow program is for a maximum period of two years; whereas, the regular Fellowships range from six months to two years.
