ILBS stands for the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences. It is a mono-super specialty hospital specifically dedicated to liver and biliary diseases. The ILBS is in New Delhi, India, and has been established by the Government of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi as an autonomous body, under the Societies Registration Act – 1860, with Shiv Kumar Sarin as its founding director.

ILBS is essentially a teaching hospital that has been conferred the status of Deemed University by the University Grants Commission (UGC). ILBS was been created by the Government of Delhi in order to make it a dedicated international center of excellence for diagnosing and managing liver and biliary diseases and offering advanced training and research in the field of Hepatobiliary Sciences.

Even though liver and biliary sciences are the main focus of the Institute, Nephrology is an important sister branch of the hospital. The other specialties offered by the hospital are support based Oncology, and Cardiology, in addition to other liver-related specialties such as 

  • Pediatric Hepatology
  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Renal Transplant
  • Urology
  • Radiology.

 In these uncertain coronavirus pandemic times, the institute was the pioneer in starting convalescent plasma therapy for treating serious coronavirus patients in Delhi under the supervision of Dr. Sarin.
