About the Author:, , , , , , Archibald Joseph Cronin (Dr. A J Cronin) was born on, 19 July 1896, in Cardross, Argyll, United Kingdom. He was a, Scottish novelist and physician. Dr. Cronin was a Medical Inspector, for Mines from 1924 to 1926. After his first novel, Hatter's Castle, he, gave up medicine to concentrate on writing. His best novels such as The, Stars Look Down and The Citadel were greeted with critical and popular, acclaim. His most influential novel The Citadel was published in 1937 and, later it became the inspiration for the National Health Service, introduced, in Britain in the years following the Second World War. He won the, prestigious National Book Awards for Fiction in 1937 for his novel The, Citadel.
