LEARNING PHASES, , Suggested, Timeframe, , A. Introduction / Panimula, , Learning Activities, , Having the adequate knowledge about tools and equipment is, essential in nail care services for they are the foundation in performing, different nail care tasks. On the previous weeks you were given, developmental activities and learning tasks to be able to identify, use and, observe safety procedures of using tools and equipment according to task, requirements. This week, you will be acquainted with preventive and, corrective maintenance of nail care tools and equipment that is equally, important in nail care services., , 4 Days, , Preventive maintenance is a strategy that is carried out in a regular, basis which means that all tools and equipment is inspected regularly even, if there is no sign of failure. By doing so, any tool and equipment failure is, avoided and prevented to make sure that they are functioning well and, safe to use. This maintenance routine requires a maintenance plan to ensure, reliability of tools and equipment in terms of performance and safety of the, people., On the other hand, corrective maintenance is a set of technical tasks, which are designed to repair tools and equipment as there is a need to fix, or even replace them. This kind maintenance is used to correct errors which, needs to be repaired to restore its function. It does not require a, maintenance plan because the problem should be solved immediately, since failure is not predicted. This means that this type of maintenance is only, performed when there is failure and malfunction., Therefore, after going through the learning activities in this lesson you, will be able to perform basic preventive and corrective maintenance of nail

care tools and equipment. Specifically, you will be able to perform the, following tasks:, 1., 2., , Clean tools according to standard procedures., Inspect defective tools and equipment., Hello, I am very excited for this 2-week activities because I invited, a nail care technician friend named Louis from a renowned, salon in our community. I will provide you the appropriate knowledge and skills in, performing preventive and corrective maintenance of nail care, tools and equipment. Let us start with understanding the, difference between disinfection, sanitation, and sterilization so as, with the distinction of antiseptics and disinfectants., Sir Louis, let me enlighten them with the differences of those 3, important terms. To avoid the spread of contagious germs, the, first and most critical step is to clean., 1. Cleaning is also known as sanitation. Both terms apply to, the elimination of visible pollution and debris, as well as a, substantial reduction in the number of germs on the, surface., 2. On the other hand, the destruction of viruses, bacteria,, and fungi on surfaces that have contacted a client's skin is known as, disinfection. When disinfected correctly, a surface is less likely to spread, infection or disease. Since disinfectants are harmful to skin and can cause, irritation or allergic reactions, disinfectants are only used on non-living, surfaces., , Fig. 1. “Disinfection Icon” by Gan Khoon Lay is Licensed under CC By 3.0, 3. Alternatively, the absolute removal of all microscopic organisms on a, surface is referred to as sterilization. Surgical instruments are sterilized in, hospitals. Chemical sterilization is too dangerous for salons, however,, sterilization of nippers, files, and other tools using pressurized steam) is needed, in certain areas and preferred by some salons. Table tops and foot spas are, too large to fit into an autoclave and must be disinfected instead., , Fig. 2. “Sterilizer Icon” by Vector Point is Licensed under CC By 3.0

Thank you Mam Salie for explaining their differences as well as, their important roles in nail care services. Now, I want you to have, an initial idea about the roles of antiseptic and disinfectant in, cleaning. Antiseptics are drugs that are applied to living, organisms, such as human skin, to destroy any microorganisms that, may be found on the surface. Mouthwash and hand sanitizer are two, examples of antiseptics that are both safe to use on your skin while still being, highly effective at destroying large numbers of microorganisms., Disinfectants are applied to non-living surfaces like countertops and, handrails to destroy the microorganisms that live there. Alcohols and bleach, are different forms of disinfectants. Before performing the standard cleaning, procedures, you must have the skills in preparing the needed materials. I, have prepared visual representations of the preparation for sanitation and, sterilization. I want you to read, analyze and understand the procedural, diagram below:, The Sanitizing Jar’s Preparation, , Preparation of Equipment and Surface for Sanitation, , Sterilization of Metal Implements
Page 12 :
Bear in mind that all tools, implements, and equipment should not be used, until they have been properly sanitized or sterilized to avoid, diseases, and that all products on the trolley are neatly, arranged. Personal hygiene should be a priority for all, beauticians. Using disposable goods wherever possible is highly, recommended. The following diagram will help you to know and, perform cleaning of tools and equipment according to, standard procedures., Clean Tools and Equipment According to Standard Procedures, , You must always guarantee the client's protection and comfort, by using good working condition tools and equipment, as well as, supplying him or her with sufficient personal protective equipment., Here are the standard procedures in keeping tool and equipment, clean, safe and functional.
Page 13 :
Your main goal is to provide each customer with the best quality, nail care service possible, so all tools and equipment are, thoroughly examined to decide which ones are in good working, condition and which ones are not. That is why functional tools and, equipment are maintained in a secure manner in compliance, with salon and local health regulations. Non-functional or defective tools, and equipment are correctly isolated and numbered for repair or disposal., You can use the following checklist form in reporting the condition of nail, care tools and equipment., All you must do is to put a CHECK (/) in, tool or equipment is FUNCTIONAL., On the other hand, put a CHECK (/) in, tool or equipment is DEFECTIVE., , column if the, column if the, , I hope you learned the essential knowledge and skills in basic, preventive and corrective maintenance of nail care tools and, equipment. You are amazing! Now, you can move forward, with the learning tasks I have prepared for you! Good Luck!
