CARDIOTONIC, Family:Scrophularaceae, Geographical Source: India, Europe, England, France, Newzeland, America, Cultivation and collection: For cultivation of plant generally well matured soil is utilized., Mature soil contains all required materials for growth of plant., The collection of leaves is carried out after one year up to two years only. The quality of the, leaves is good collected first year as compare to second year., Generally, collection of leaves is carried out in afternoon as concentration of active, ingredients is more at this time. The leaves are dried immediately after collection at 60 oc. It, is store in moisture proof container. The presence of moisture may loss the activity of, chemical constituents., Morphology of leaves, 1)Colour: Upper surface is dark green and lower surface is light green, 2)Size:10 to 30 cm in length and 15 cm wide., 3)Shape: Oval. Margin is present and surface contain hair, Chemical Constituents: Digitalis contain Cardiac glycoside i.e. purpurea glycoside A and, B.The other C.C. which form after hydrolysis of purpurea glycoside are Digitoxin,Gitoxin,, Digitoxigenine. This glycoside are having cardiotonic activity., Chemical Test:, 1)Baljet test:, Lamina of leaf+sodium picrate=orange colour, 2) Legal Test:, Alkaline solution of glycoside with ammonia+ Sodium nitroprusside=pink or red colour., 3)Keller killani test:, 1gm of drug dissolve in10ml (70%) of alcohol. Heat for 3 minutes. Filter it. Add 5ml water, and lead acetate solution to filtrate. Filter it. Add equal volume of chloroform to filtrate, (Extract), , S.G.S.S.COLLEGE OF PHARMACY-MANUR

CARDIOTONIC, Dissolve extract in glacial acetic acid and add ferric chloride solution. Transfer the solution to, test tube containing conc. Sulphuric acid. Reddish brown or red color developed due to, presence of digitoxigenin (Cardiac Glycoside), Uses of Digitalis: 1)As a Cardiotonic in treatment of congestive cardiac failure., 2)As a Diuretic for the treatment of micturition., , Arjuna Bark, Biological Source: It consist of dried bark of terminalia arjuna, Family: Combretaceae., Chemical Constituents: Arjuna bark consist of tannins i.e. arjunolic acid, arjunic acid and, calcium salt., Uses:, 1)As a cardiotonic, 2)As a diuretic, 3)As a astringent, , S.G.S.S.COLLEGE OF PHARMACY-MANUR
