ELTA ELT NEWS, , EDITORIAL, Education is the manifestation of the perfection already present in man. It cannot be received but achieved. A, teacher can never teach anything if he/she doesn’t learn. Teaching and learning process should focus on making, children to think and express creatively which can be possible through different discourses like dialogue,, discussion, reading, observation, thinking, field visits, group work, sharing experiences, experimentation, project, works and reflecting on them. Language can be constructed through mutual interaction, active engagement,, collaborative work and sharing. Learning by doing individually or in groups help them to acquire language very, easily., Quality in teaching and learning process depends on the quality of curriculum, textbooks, classroom environment,, children learning outcomes and the teacher preparation. Pratham survey conducted recently in the area of school, education reveals that about 40% of class V children do not possess basic literacy competencies i.e. reading, comprehension and independent writing. Programme for International Students Assessment (PISA) tests the, standards of students of different countries for reading, Mathematics and Science in 73 countries and Indian, students ranked 72 among 73 participating countries. Another survey conducted by McKinsey in their report on the, emerging global market found that only about 25% of Indian graduates are employable globally. This is clearly a, problem not only with schools but also with the nature of education delivery in the country., There is a process of collaboration where the learners share their ideas and learning experiences with their peers, exploring new ideas and coming to consensus. It could be possible with DOP. The classroom process envisioned in, the new curriculum provides space for the learners to collaborate whether it is in reading, producing discourses or, editing. The teachers have to understand the process of sharing and the synergy that can be generated through the, process. The classroom should neither be teacher centred, nor learner centred; but it must be knowledge centred, and discourse oriented., I take this opportunity to thank all the contributors for the discourses and question paper setters for their, commitment, hardwork and patience., I express my special thanks to Dr. Palakurthy Dinakar, Asst. Prof. in English for spending his time in editing the, handbook., Happy Teaching, , Bathini Komuraiah, Editor, , Vol. III, Special Issue, , I, , July - December 2014

ELTA ELT NEWS, , TUITION TO INTUITION: UNDERSTANDING DISCOURSE, ORIENTED PEDAGOGY IN SCHOOL CURRICULUM, Dr. Palakurthy Dinakar,, Asst. Prof. in English,, Govt. Degree College, Korutla,, Dist: Karimnagar. Telangana State., Man is a speaking animal and communicates through the language. It is used to express one’s ideas, thoughts,, feelings, desires, experiences and emotions within in a similar linguistic community. It is a unique characteristic, feature of human beings and a social group operates and interacts with it., It is the flesh and blood of our culture. It cannot be imagined the world without a language. In the absence of, language most of the activities and the progress stop. English is proved to be the global language because of its, usability and popularity. Nearly 670 million people use English with fluency and competency. (Crystal 61), Language does not exist in isolation in the form of letters, sounds, words, phrases or sentences but embedded in, the shape of discourses like songs, dialogues, poems, descriptions, plays, stories, letters etc., They naturally have, coherence and cohesion among the linguistic units like words, phrases or sentences. It involves the study of both, the form (written form) and the function (spoken form), which can be defined as connected language in speech, and writing., An instance of spoken or written language which has describable internal relationships of form and meaning,, which relates coherently to some external communicative function or purpose; a given audience/ interlocutor., (Celce-Murcia & Olshtailn, 20), The Discourse Oriented Pedagogy (DOP) exposes learners to authentic material illustrating the pattern of usage, that the learners are expected to use it in their daily life. The teacher must be sure of providing discourses that the, students should understand the content and vocabulary of it. They must be made available to the learners to, express themselves using the patterns in speech and writing. Authentic communication does not take place in, sentences but it takes place in discourse episodes, which may be as short as a word or as long as a book., A discourse can be a primary resource which can initiate the learner to use the language. The language teachers, should incorporate an awareness of discourses into their teaching if they truly wish to implement a communicative, approach. It provides a means of improving communicative competence, putting language development under, the learner’s control., The discourse analysts see language as a dynamic, social, interactive phenomenon – whether between speaker, and listener, or writer and reader. . . Discourse involves the participants’ beliefs and expectations, the knowledge, they share about each other and about the world and the situation in which they interact. (David Crystal, 116), A discourse analysis of spoken language focuses on turn-taking practices and social encounters. It gives importance, to cohesion, coherence, acceptability and situational expressions. It facilitates the students to combine several, dimensions of language within the context. “When we speak or write, we seldom do so by accident; rather, we have, a social purpose in mind.” (Van Dijk, 8) It helps for knowledge construction, which is not conceived as an individual, activity. The history of mankind reveals that knowledge construction is a collective process where the individuals, , Vol. III, Special Issue, , II, , July - December 2014

Implicitly, this means that the teaching and, learning process is not something that takes place between the teacher and the individual learner only. There is a, process of collaboration where the learners share their ideas and learning experiences with their peers exploring, new ideas and coming to consensus. It could be possible only with DOP. The classroom process envisioned in the, new curriculum provides space for the learners to collaborate whether it is in reading, producing discourses or, editing. The teachers have to understand the process of sharing and the synergy that can be generated through the, process. The classroom should neither be teacher centred, nor learner centred; but it must be knowledge centred, and discourse oriented. The important uses of discourses are:, l, , They help the learners to use language effectively in oral and written forms., , l, , They are suitable at different levels of the students., , l, , They help the learners for better use of lexical, grammatical and rhetorical aspects of the language., , l, , They encourage the learners as they focus on the process and not on the product., , l, , They promote creative and meaningful acquisition of language., , l, , They ensure collaborative learning atmosphere in the classroom., , The textbook is the only source for the most of the teachers and the students to interact with English as a second, language. But they are supposed to go beyond the textbook by exploring other authentic materials such as, newspapers, journals, story books, comics etc. in order to widen their world of English. The study of language at, school level is meant not only for passing the examination but using it in day-to-day life. Discourses can be an, important pedagogical tool which can eliminate all inhibitions of the learners regarding usage of the language and, instil confidence in them. It facilitates for language acquisition and makes the students autonomous and, independent users of language. Teaching grammar and vocabulary as discrete entities will not help the learners, acquire language but they are to be contextually embedded in appropriate discourses. They have to get used to, applying their intuitive language sense which can be facilitated through editing passages and correcting errors in, assignments and project works. Children should not be pressurized for producing correct expressions and the, classroom should be used as a place for editing the errors., Language competencies can be categorised in six broad areas as academic standards. They include Listening and, Speaking, Reading comprehension, Conventions of writing, Vocabulary, Grammatical awareness and Creative, expression (Oral and Written discourses). These discourses are further divided into (11) major discourses and (6), minor discourses. These discourses can be effectively implemented through the following classroom process., l, , The pre-reading: The teacher asks a few motivational and analytical questions in an informal way to instil, confidence and initiate communicative competence among the students. It can be done using a discourse like a, song, a story or a photograph that will work like a trigger for sensitizing the students towards acquiring the, language., , l, , Reading: The students are encouraged for individual, collaborative and scaffolding reading on the basis of the, relevance of the material and individual differences of the students. They help the student to get mastery over, the content. Teacher’s reading provides scope to the students to have reading the passage with voice, modulation, gestures and expressions which help them to have more understanding of the text., , Vol. III, Special Issue, , III, , July - December 2014

ELTA ELT NEWS, l, , The post-reading: The major activity of the post-reading is the construction of a discourse by the learners. As, the learners could experience enough linguistic inputs, they will be in a position to construct a specific, discourse. Its process includes individual writing, presentation in the classroom, group discussion for merits, and demerits of it, getting teacher’s opinion for thematic, syntactic, morphological, punctuation and spelling, editing. Finally the vocabulary and grammar exercises will be constructed in accordance with the DOP which is, based on constructivism that yields desired results only with the integrating language skills and exercises., , REFERENCES, 1. The, sounds of police sirens, ambulances and cries of victims filled the area with sounds. This brutal incident killed 17, and at least 119 injured. It was unfortunate to me to witness small children, youngsters and old people severely, injured and I heard their yells for help. It was indeed a nightmarish. Some lost their arms and legs, some people, disfigured and some heads were cut off. I was terrified at the sight of the victims. I returned home tearfully, with, weighty heart. Police suspected the blasts to be the conspiracy of ISI terrorists., I still cannot forget that incident. In the first picture, a man is cutting down the trees with an electric, band saw machine. In the second picture, a person is leveling the land with a bulldozer in the forest where trees, have already been cut. There we find lush green forest trees are cut down by people for their selfish needs scenic, beauty of nature will be no more. I think the persons are cutting down the trees grow crops. This is the clear, evidence how people are cutting down forests for their various selfish purposes. In olden days, people used to cut, down forests with axes but now-a- days, people are using advanced technology like electrical band saws,, bulldozers, etc… This mechanization of cutting trees leads to rapid destruction of forests. Destruction of forests is, called deforestation. Deforestation happens in many ways: when trees are cut down to grow crops, for livestock, for, building things like houses and furniture, for firewood. Deforestation is badly affecting our environment. Although, there may be a need to cut down trees to some extent, humans and other species need to protect the forests and, woodlands. Trees are not just beautiful; they also give shelter to many different kinds of animals that could become, extinct with deforestation. Can we imagine the earth without trees? No, definitely not. Trees provide good things for, humans and for the environment. Our trees are our legacy given to us by our ancestors; it’s our duty to leave the, same to our descendants. So, we must all join hands to prevent deforestation and to promote reforestation. We also, have to encourage present generation to strive for afforestation., , QUESTIONS FOR PRACTICE, 1. ELTA ELT NEWS, CONSTRUCTION OF THE DISCOURSE, H.No. 10-10-10,, Kashibugga,, Warangal., 10-12-2014., Dear Ravi,, Life is going smoothly for me. How is life treating you?, Any way I’m writing this letter to share my feelings and ideas regarding the movie ‘Seventh Sense’., The film is based on a historical personality by name Bodhidharma., It is a semi science fictional film. The story of the film in brief is: Bodhidharma is a real character who, was basically a king of Pallava dynasty from Tamil Nadu in 6th Century. He was an expert in martial, arts, medicine and hypnotism. He goes to China, saves their people from a deadly virus and teaches, the art of kung-fu. Eventually he dies in China. Aravind, who is the descendent of Pallavas, presently, works in Bombay Circus. He is approached by Subha Srinivas who is a bio-technology scientist, who, submits a thesis which proves that the attributes and powers of our ancestors can be brought back to, the current generation if the DNA matches. She aims to get back the powers of Bodhidharma through, Aravind as he is having 83% match of the DNA. Meanwhile, a man is sent from China with evil, intentions. The rest of the story is all about how Aravind rises to the occasion and destroys the evil, powers., I was wondered at the making of the film. The story, screen play and direction were done by, A.R.Murugadas who was a director of ‘Ghajini’ fame. Haris Jayaraj, the music director of this film,, composed some fantastic songs. Peter Hein choreographed the songs in a synchronized manner and, also devised risky and captivating stunts. Ravi K Chandran’s cinematography has immortalized the, characters of hero, Surya and heroine, Shruthi Hassan. Johnny Tri Nguyen - a Vietnamese American, actor has donned the role of villain and he is deadly. Dialogues by Rama Krishna are apt., Any how I felt that the film is really scintillating. I’ll be glad if you see the movie and let me know your, feelings., With good wishes,, Yours verily,, Mahender, To, T. Have you been observing how many, districts in Telangana, experiencing drought this year? Places of same region are experiencing different climates., Why? Do you guess? It is just because of global warming. You may agree or may not. But the fact is the same! Now, a day, everybody talks about global warming. But how many of us are aware of it? Do you know it is nothing but, increase of average surface temperature due to the effect of green house gases?, Today, I wish to discuss global warming. It is the greatest environmental challenge, hitting the planet., Why this global warming?, It is due to the emission of excessive emission of green house gases., Who is responsible for it? Of course, man!, By using motor vehicles ruthlessly, by using coal for producing electricity, excessive use of electrical and electronic, appliances man is causing danger to the environment., , Vol. III, Special Issue, , 51, , July - December 2014

ELTA ELT NEWS, Over the past 100 years, human beings have been burning trees and fossil fuels, there by releasing millions of tones, of CO2 into the atmosphere.USA alone emits some 25% of the world’s green house gases and we’re sharing 4% of, the world pollution., Do you know what is the largest sector contributing global warming? It is the electricity generation which is 33%,, followed by transportation 28%, industry-contributes 20%. These three secretors are contributing 81% of global, warming., Long ago I saw a Telugu movie called, “Adhithya 369”; in that film we could see effects of radiation after 100 years., People cannot come out without radiation protecting suit! Of course, it may be a fiction. But if we do not act right, now we may face such situation. Scientists are warning us, if this situation continues, by 2100 global warming may, 0, rise up to 1.40-5.8 C, sea level rise 15-95 cms. Experts also expect the Arctic Ocean to have ice-free summers by 2040, or earlier., We may not see polar bears and penguins over certain period in future., 22% penguins and 70 species of frogs have been extincted., So, I say it’s the time we acted! But just not debate every day on every platform global warming. Is it just by debates, or seminars, can we reduce the problem? No! We need to act appropriately., Here I would like to quote what Tony Blair said in 2005, at a seminar., “Global warming is too serious for the world any longer to ignore its danger or split into opposing factions on it”., Katrina is the testament of the global warming about 20,000 people died in the havoc., Now we are seeing the dramatic effects of global warming oceans are rising, coral reefs are dying, species are, disappearing, glaciers are melting, droughts, hurricanes, floods and they are occurring with greater frequency and, greater intensity., Its time we acted:, Not just a talk! We need to get self awareness and to spread awareness. Tell everyone what you know about, global warming. It’s the time to stop talking and to begin acting., Hope everyone act now., Thank you, , MODEL QUESTION – 2, A seminar is conducted in your school on the Impact of Films on Teenagers. ( A class on personality development), , CONSTRUCTION OF THE DISCOURSE, Impact of Films on Teens, Distinguished personalities, the president of this seminar, teachers and my beloved students!, What is the most entertaining thing in your life?, Out of school hours when you are at home or in your leisure time, what do you do? Of course watching films!, We all know films are major part of teenage life and culture. Cinema became a cultural part of teen’s life. Going to, cinema with a group of friends and sitting at home in front of a TV, computer or laptop, we enjoy watching movies., Teenagers have made cinema a major part of their lives., Because of the amount of consumption of films based media, the influence on developing minds is considerable,, according to a researcher., It’s not a wonder if I say film industry is getting flourished just because of teens!, Don’t you believe that film directors are making movies keeping in view of youth? Most of the films run round the, life of youth, and college life. You know, what is the main theme of most of the movies? Of course, love. As it is the, subject of yours, you watch it more. ELTA ELT NEWS, have tremendous influence in shaping young lives in the realm of entertainment towards the ideals and objectives, of normal adulthood”., Once I happened to attend a class on personality development, there the speaker asked the students a question., i.e.‘who is your favourite hero, that influenced you?” All the students said such and such favourite hero or heroines, names. At the end the speaker concluded by saying we should have favourite real heroes but not reel heroes!, What I understood from that incident is teens have filmy heroes as their favourites even they are much influenced, by them. In particular teens and youth worship their heroes or heroines and follow every act and style of them they, have a lot of effect on their behavior such as teasing, falling in love, smoking cigarette, consuming alcohol and, engaging in sex and violence etc., Teens with impulse control problems or behavioral issues may be influenced by, movies. Some teens that are exposed to excessive violence may end up in bullies what other may become victims of, bullying in schools., Watching movies have the long lasting effects on the way view the world., A recent survey conducted on watching TV programmes and movies state that teens are watching 2hrs of TV, programmes per day and between 10 and 20hrs on watching films per month., Film producers and directors are making money on the weakness of teens or youth. The teens are innocents. They, follow the dialogues and actions of their favourite star. They hit like bullets. They simply follow them not knowing, their impact on life. Movies take them to the imagery world which in the most cases is unrealistic but innocent, children follow them blindly and making the teens likely to report violence in school, domestic violence on the part, of boyfriend or girlfriend and teasing or bullying their teachers is the result of unhealthy culture developed by, watching movies. Of course, I believe that there are certain movies which are teaching good, but bad are more. 90%, of film they show bad and at the end they show the good. But children catch the bad easily if the directors and, producers realize this fact and produce films which give life fitting ideals. It would be great help to the nation and, besides making money. Parents should take care of the things and be selective in showing films to their wards., I don’t say you shouldn’t watch movies, but you must be selective. We should pick the good from films as if a swan, separates and consumes milk from waterymilk., Thank you., , QUESTIONS FOR PRACTICE, 1. Teachers Day is celebrated in your school. Mandal Parishath President is attending as the chief guest of the day., The headmaster of the school will preside over the function. You have to give speech. Prepare a script for the, speech., 2. He convinced them instead of a ‘special’ school for disabled, children I should now start going to a ‘normal’ school. He said that many physically challenged people have been, really successful in life by studying in a normal school. If I join in a normal school, I will learn to deal with other, people better and gain more confidence. He said that I would better prepare to face the world after attending a, ‘normal’ school. That made me feel very happy but I’m scared too. In the special school in which I study, I feel quite, at home. Here other children are like me. A few children are worse than me. We all understood each other as we all, are sailing in the same boat. Nobody makes fun of anybody and we all try to help each other. But I’m scared of the, new school. If I’m the only one in the school with impairment, the ‘normal’ children will laugh at me! But I do realize, that my uncle is right. If I want to be able to do something in life I must learn to face normal people first., Yet, I wonder how I will find the courage to walk into the new school with my limp., Anu., , MODEL QUESTION-2, You are Aryan, you happened to go to your village on an urgent work in a crowded bus on a hot summer day., write your experience in the form of a diary entry., , SENSITIZATION, l, , Do you mention the time and date?, , l, , What do you want to enter in the diary?, , l, , What is the reason for your journey?, , l, , Is your travel a must?, , l, , How did you go to your village?, , l, , How is your bus journey?, , l, , Is the bus crowded?, , l, , What are your experiences in the journey?, , l, , What is your feelings on getting down the bus?, , l, , Do you sign at the end?, , Vol. III, Special Issue, , 64, , July - December 2014

Read the following excerpt from ‘The Journey’., However, I finally did decide to go. I did not have much to carry by way of luggage – just a trunk. Ours is a hilly terrain,, without any motorable roads – and there is no certainty that we are ever going to have any roads. In any case, while, coming home we do not carry bedding. Besides, I had come home this time round for a special purpose: to get, married. My parents had arranged my marriage according to the customs of our tribal society. Time flew, and five, months into my marriage I realized it. Initially I thought of extending my leave – even taking unpaid leave. But after, some dilly-dallying I finally decided against it because marriage had increased my responsibilities and I had got, into debt., On my way home from the bus stop my trunk had been carried by a porter. The problem now was we couldn’t find, anyone who could help me carry the trunk to the bus stop. At another time of the year we would have easily found, someone to help me, but now most of the villagers were busy in the fields. Nobody had time to spare for me. In fact,, carrying the trunk should not have been such a worry for me except that my education had made me shun physical, labour. After all I was a government officer and the idea of people seeing me carry my own luggage was not at all, amusing. Otherwise for a young man like me it should not have been an issue to carry a 20- kilo chest on my back., Finally, my father came up with a solution. ‘Don’t worry. I myself will see you off at Dirang.’, , Now, choose the correct answer from the options given and write in your answer booklet:, (4X1=4), 1. Students can make use of the last pages of the answer booklet for rough work, while answering the, discourse., , Section – A : Reading Comprehension, (1 – 7) Read the following passage from “The Rendezvous with Ray”, It was a unique friendship that developed between a French-Canadian priest and one of the world’s greatest film, directors, and had a singular impact on Bengali films both academically and practically. It was en-route to India, in1961, at a stopover in New York, that 26-year- old Fr. Gaston Roberge was acquainted with the works of Satyajit, Ray through the Apu Trilogy. He found the world of Apu so fascinating that he saw all three films in one sitting; and, there began his longstanding love affair with the people of India and Bengali cinema and culture, which led to, path-breaking work in those fields. In his latest book, Satyajit Ray, Essays:1970-2005, a compilation of his essays as, the name suggests, being published by Manohar Publishers, New Delhi, Roberge provides a scholarly, original, analysis of Ray’s works, giving an insight into the greatness of Ray both as a person and as an artist., “The Apu Trilogy was, in fact, my first portal to West Bengal and its people,” he told Frontline. In his youth, all he, knew of Bengal was through Mircea Eliade’s La Nuit Bengalie, some of Tagore’s poems, and a Reader’s Digest article, on Mother Teresa. If the harsh image of poverty brought out by the article on the “Saint of the Slums” haunted him,, Apu’s world came as a reassurance. “No. Apu, Sarbajaya, even Harihar did not need my help-but how not to love, them? I thought it was fortunate that I would soon be among them,” he wrote., Roberge does not endorse the accusation of Ray’s detractors that the master director made his reputation selling, India’s poverty to the West. “What struck me most was not the material poverty depicted in the films, but the, enormous spiritual poverty of some rich people is much more deplorable than material poverty,” he said. Roberge, does not speak with the arrogance of the West. “I was here on a quest to know the world and in the process know, myself. I did not come here to convert. In fact, I am the one who got converted,” he said., , Now, choose the correct answer from the options given and write in your answer booklet:, (4X1=4), 1. So while the, quest for renewable energy resources is most welcome, in the near future we can’t do away with the storage of, huge quantities of oil and gas., Keeping in view all these considerations, what are our options? Clearly the safely measures have to increase, safety, budgets should all increase but as the possibility of accident still remains in the case of storage of inflammable, products, we have to keep in mind that the accident doesn’t go beyond acceptable/tolerable limits particularly in, terms of loss of life and threats to health and environment., The obvious option should be to spread the essential supplies of oil and gas over a number of smaller storages, located at considerable distance from each other and preferably in different directions of the city., For example, if storage of one crore litres of oil is needed near a city this can be spread over four or five sites. The, maximum permissible limit will have to be decided by keeping in view worst possible scenario and the limits of, damage that can be accepted. Once these limits of storage have been decided, then, these will have to be, implemented strictly., As in the case of oil and gas, in the case of all other inflammable materials(like the PVC material and electronic waste, stores at Mundka) there should be strict limits on single-point storage to keep any possibility of accident within, manageable limits., , Answer the following questions, 1. All the answers are to be written in the answer booklet only., 3. Students can make use of the last pages of the answer booklet for rough work, while answering the, discourses.\, , Section - A: Reading Comprehension, (Questions 1 – 7): Read the following passage., Although not the longest river in America, the Rio Grande is one of the most important. But, unlike other significant, rivers, it is not used for shipping. In fact, oceangoing ships cannot navigate the waters. No, what makes the Rio, Grande so important is its location. Since 1846, it has been the official border of Texas and Mexico., The Rio Grande is either the fourth or fifth longest river system in North America. It all depends on how it is, measured. Because the river twists so much, it occasionally changes course. These course shifts can cause it to be, longer or shorter, at its last official measure, the Rio Grande clocked in at 1,896 miles. The river starts in Colorado,, extends downward to the Gulf of Mexico., Downward is the best way of describing it too. Not only does the river extend south, but it also starts in the, mountains and gets lower and lower in elevation as it extends to the Gulf., Its name is Spanish for the “Big River,” but the Rio Grande is actually known as Rio Bravo in Mexico. “Bravo” translates, as “furious,” so the name makes sense. Because of its twists and turns, it certainly does seem to be angrier than, most rivers!, The Rio Grande today is mostly used as a source of drinking water. Sadly, much of the water has been drained from, the river. Parts of the river are almost dry! This is because people use more water from the river than the river can, get back from rain and other sources. Experts are working to correct this, though, with hopes of restoring the river to, its past strength., Today, the river is important as a source of water for Texans and Mexicans. More important, it is a symbol of, cooperation between two nations. Though borders like the Rio Grande separate nations, they are also shared, spaces. The Rio Grande is therefore a symbol of friendship and peace between two peoples., , Vol. III, Special Issue, , 106, , July - December 2014
