She was sent to the village school. At sixteen, most of the girls used to get married. But she opposed it saying that first she must get full, educations. As per the local customs she had to wear traditional clothes meant for girls. But she wore, shorts. This created an interest n her to know how that happened., Why did Santosh go to Uttarkashi?, Ans- While in Jaipur Santosh used to watch villagers from her hostel room. She would see them for, a while going up the hill and then suddenly vanishing. One day she decided to check it out herself., She met a few mountaineers. This greatly raised her curiosity in climbing. She enrolled herself at, Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi. She went there to pursue her course of, mountaineering., Describe the human side of Santosh as a mountaineer., Ans- During the 1992 Everest mission Santosh saw a climber dying at the South col. She could not, save him. But she managed to save another climber, Mohan Singh. She shared with him her oxygen., He would have died if she had not done so., How did Santosh describe her feelings when she was on top of Mt. Everest?, Ans- At last Santosh stood on Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world. She took some time, for the enormity of the moment to sink in. Then she unfurled the Indian tricolor. The feeling was, indescribable.
