TOPIC: ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE, CLASS: VIII, A short biography of the poet William Shakespeare., William Shakespeare was a renowned English poet,, playwright and actor born in 1564 in Stratford Upon, Avon. He is often called England’s national poet and, the “Bard of Avon”.His works consists of around, 38 plays,154 sonnets, two long narrative poems and, a few other verses of which the authorship of some is, uncertain. His plays have been translated into every, major living languages and are performed more often, than those of any other playwright. His plays were, mainly comedies, tragedies and histories and some of, them remain regarded as the best work produced in, these genres. His plays such as Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, Comedy of Errors, Othello,Romeo, and Juliet etc are considered as the finest works in the English Language. Shakespeare is truly, regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English literature and reckoned as the world’s finest, dramatist., UNDERSTANDING THE POEM., Answer these questions:, 1. The title of the poem is a comparison.How is that comparison explained in the first five lines ?, Ans: The very title of the poem compares the world and the life of man to a play enacted on stage., The people of the world are like actors who play different roles in their lifetime. Life has birth and, death which are compared to the entrances and exits of the characters on and off the stage. Every age a, man passes through is compared to an act in the play, , 2. Why does the schoolboy whine and creep like a snail? What shows,nevertheless, that he is, a healthy little chap ?, Ans: The schoolboy whines and creeps like a snail because he is unwilling to go to school and his, slow steps shows his unwillingness., Though the boy is hesitant to go to school,his face has a glow like that of a morning which shows, that he is healthy., 3. Do you think the speaker praises the young lover, or does he gently make fun of him?, Which words make you think that ?, Ans: The speaker gently mocks the lover for his longing and intensely emotional songs as trivial, as the eyebrow of his ladylove., The mocking is quite evident in the words- “Sighing like a furnace”.

4. Do you think the soldier is described seriously, or in a somewhat mocking in tone? What, supports your answer ?, Ans: The soldier, the speaker says is full of strange oaths and is always quick to quarrel. the, speaker is somewhere making a mockery out of him as the soldier aims to win fame and glory,, even if they are short-lived., The speaker seems to be puzzled and at the same time he is amused as it seems quite pointless., The words- “Seeking the bubble reputation.” support our answer., 5. What kind of man is the judge? Prosperous or poor ? Dignified or easy-going ? A serious thinker or, showy talker ? What leads you to that view ?, Ans: The judge is a matured man and is with full of wisdom.
