What features of the artwork you are attracted to??, _____________________________________________________________________, , Let Us Study, Arts of Mindanao, Sarimanok: The Legendary Bird of Maranao, Mindanao, referred to as “The Land of Promise,” is the second largest, and southernmost island in the Philippine archipelago. Mindanao also has, the largest concentration of ethno-linguistic groups and culturally diverse, islands. These groups are mostly Muslim., The artistry and fine craftmanship of the Muslims who dwell on, the western and central part of Mindanao is, no doubt, an art form that, Filipinos could be proud of. It is truly an art Filipinos could call their own., The Tausugs, Yakans, Maguindanaons, and Maranaos traced their descent, from Malay-Indonesian race and their firm inclusion into Philippine, geographic-political sovereignty make them truly Filipinos. The Tausugs of, Sulu are excellent artisans of fine crafts and artist. The Maguindanaons of, Cotabato Province are skillful weavers of fine mats and baskets while the, Yakans of Sulu and Basilan are excellent silk and cotton textile weavers. Their, design of okir, torogan, lantaka and sarimanok, among others, could stand, along as one of the high-quality Asian Folk arts., The Sarimanok is a legendary bird of, the Maranao. It comes from the words “sari”, meaning cloth or garment and “manok” for, chicken., It has become a significant symbol of, Maranao art. It is depicted as a fowl with, colorful wings and feathered tail, holding a, fish on its beak or talons. The head is, profusely decorated with scroll, leaf, and, spiral motifs.
