Answer the following questions in one or two sentences:, i) Why did the doctors advise Framton Nuttel a complete rest?, Ans: The doctors advised Framton Nuttel a complete rest because he had a nervous, breakdown., ii) What made Framton visit Mrs.Sappleton?, Ans: Framton Nuttel had a nervous breakdown and his doctors advised him for a complete, rest in a quiet spot somewhere in the country. His sister wanted him to pay a visit and meet, Mrs. Sappleton because she felt that Mrs. Sappleton would make him feel so much at home, because she was such a kind person. Thus Framton went to see Mrs. Sappleton., iii) Give your impression towards Mrs.Sappleton niece?, Ans: Mrs. Sappleton’s niece was about 15 years old. She spoke in a grown up manner and, seemed the very opposite of shy. She was very clever at making up stories in the spur of the, moment., iv) What was Mrs. Sappleton’s great sorrow?, Ans: Mrs. Sappleton lost her husband and her two younger brothers along with their dog, three years ago when they went to the moors for a day’s shooting., v) Why did Framton think that Mrs. Sappleton was mad?, Ans: The girl told Framton that about three years ago, Mrs. Sappleton’s husband and her two, younger brothers had gone for their day’s shooting. In crossing the moor to their favourite, spot, they were all engulfed in a bog. Their bodies were never recovered. When Mrs., Sappleton told him that she was waiting for her husband and her brothers who were to arrive, anytime, Framton felt that she was mad., , Page | 1

vi) Why did Framton rush out of the room?, Ans: Framton rushed out of the room because he was scared and shocked to see the three, men, who he thought were dead, walking towards the open window., vii) How did the niece explain Framton’s sudden departure from the room?, Ans: She told another story. She said that he was afraid of dogs because of a terrifying, experience in India. She explained that he was once chased by a pack of wild dogs into a, graveyard and he had to spend the night in a newly dug grave with the creatures howling, right above his head., viii) Describe the significance of the open window in the story., Ans: The window is central to the story. Through it the aunt’s husband and her two brothers, had gone out hunting. Mrs. Sappleton was expecting them to come back through the window, which was left open. Framton was frightened to see them coming towards the window., ix) Relate what happened to the three hunters three years ago., Ans: According to the niece Mrs.Sappleton, the three hunters and their dog went off the moor, for a day’s shooting. But on their way to the moor, they fell into a bog and were simply, swallowed up - all three of them and their dog as well. The bogs aren’t dangerous but that, year, because of that terrible amount of rain in the summer it became dangerous from the, people to travel to. Their bodies were never found., x) Bring out the element of suspense in the story., Ans: When the girl found out that Mr. Framton knew nothing about her family, she made the, open window the center of the conversation. The fact that the hunters were lost on the moors, added mystery to the story. At first the open window symbolized the grief felt by Mrs., Sappleton at the lost of her husband. When she came into the room, she again brought, attention to the open window waiting for her husband and her brothers to return, which again, added more suspense to the story. Framton was frightened to see them coming towards the, window.
