JAIGOPAL GARODIA VIVEKANANDA, , VIDYALAYA, , LESSON : 10, , Separation of substances, I. Answer the following, 1 .What are the different methods used for separating the substance from a, mixture?, Ans. The different methods used for separating the substance from a mixture, are, ● Hand picking, ● winnowing, ● Threshing, ● Sieving, ● sedimentation, ● Decantation, ● Filtration, ● Evaporation, ● Condensation, 2 .What is Threshing?, Ans. Threshing is a process used to separate grains from stalks., 3 .How threshing is done to separate grain from stalks?, Ans, ● Threshing is done for beating the stalk to separate the seeds of grains, sometimes ., ● Threshing is done with the help of bullocks and machines., 4. What is sedimentation ?
Page 2 :
Ans. It is a process in which impurities heavier particles in the mixture settle, down when water is added., 5. What is Decantation? Where is it used?, Ans, ● Decantation is a process in which the liquid above the sedimented, particles are transferred to the container ., ● It is used to separate lighter components from heavier components by, adding water to the mixture., ● It is used to separate insoluble substances which are heavier than water ., 6.What is meant by saturated solution?, Ans. A solution in which no more amount of solute (example salt )can be added, to the solution at the temperature is called saturated solution ., 7. How will you separate sand and water from the mixture ?, Ans., ●, ●, ●, ●, ●, , Take some water in a beaker ., Put some sand in the water and mix it well ., Now keep the beaker aside for sometimes., We can see sand settle down at the bottom of the beaker ., Now the water can be separated by decantation and filtration., , 8. How will you separate a mixture of sand and salt ?, Ans., ● Take a mixture of sand and salt in a beaker and add some water., ●, , Leave the beaker aside for sometime .

● The sand settles down at the bottom and it is removed by decantation and, filtration ., ● Heat the salt solution by transferring it to the kettle. We can notice the, steam coming out of the spout of the kettle ., ● Hold the metal plate above the spout of the kettle with some ice on it., ●, , When the steam comes in contact with a metal plate cooled with ice, it, condenses and forms liquid water., , ●, , After all the water is evaporated, salt is left behind the kettle., , ●, , Thus by the process of sedimentation ,decantation, filtration, ,evaporation and condensation we can separate a mixture of sand and, salt.
