At the age of 15, she got married to bank, officer Madhava Das, who encouraged her writing, interests, and she started writing and publishing both, in English and in Malayalam. Summer in culcutta,, grandmother’s house and my story are some of her, notable works. In 1999 she controversially converted, to Islam, renaming herself Kamala Surayya. She, received many literary awards, including the Asian, World Prize for Literature in 1985. Kamala Das died, in Pune, on 31‘ May 2009, at the age of 75.
