The Serang of Ranaganji, Dr A J Cronin, , Activity - Letter, , , , ? You know that A.J. Cronin, the physician of the ship is extremely impressed, by the service of Hasan. Imagine that after the voyage, Cronin writes a letter to, the director of the company which owns the ship Ranaganji, detailing the, selfless service Hasan rendered during the voyage. He also requests the director, to reward Hasan with a promotion in return for his service. Draft the letter, which Cronin would write., , From, , Dr A J Cronin, , Medical Officer, Ranaganji Shipping Co., Calcutta, , 16Aug1934, , To, , Director, Ranaganji Shipping Co., Liverpool., , Dear sir., , I would like to draw your attention towards the meritorious service, rendered by Mr Hasan, the serang of Ranaganji. Our last journey from, Liverpool to Calcutta was not a pleasant one. Though the ship started sailing, under favourable circumstances within a few days we were shocked to know, that two of the crew had developed symptoms of small pox. Since the ship was, under staffed, Captain Hamble appointed Mr. Hasan to assist me. Though I was, , disappointed in the beginning, I soon found that Hasan is an embodiment of

hard work and efficiency. He arranged a shelter for the patients in the after deck, immediately. Hasan also assisted me in tending the patients and administering, , medicine to the patients., , The serang was relentless in his service and often a source of energy .He, was also fearless. Though he was born as a Muslim he voluntarily shrouded the, crew who lost their lives and even read out a few lines from Ramayana before, , giving them a water burial., , His selflessness is something that needs to be mentioned here. Never was, Hasan driven by a motive for reward. My short term with the serang has proved, him to be a gem of a person. Without him I wouldn’t have managed to prevent, , the spread of the contagion in the overcrowded ship., , Though Hasan has no ambition for reward of any kind, it will be unfair if, his fifteen years of devoted service remains unacknowledged. Therefore it is my, humble request to reward Hasan by giving him a promotion as the Chief Petty, , officer. It will surely increase the morale of the other crew., Yours truly, Sd/, , A J Cronin
