SENSE OF SELF -UNDERSTANDING ‘WHO AM I’?, NOTES, SELF, The sense of self refers to the sense of who we are and what makes us different from, everyone else., During adolescence, the period you are going through presently , start thinking more than, ever about who am I? What makes ‘me’ different from ‘others’. At this stage, more than any other, stage before this, we try to define our ‘self’., The term self refers to the totality of a person’s experiences, ideas, thoughts and feeling with, regard to herself/ himself. It is the characteristics way in which we define ourselves. The idea that, we hold of ourselves is the notion of the self., , IMPORTANCE OF UNDERSTANDING SELF, When we understand ourselves, we are able to experience ourselves., As an unique and separate individuals, This empowers us to make changes and build on our areas of strength as well as like to, make improvements., Self-awareness is often the first step of setting goals., One’s evaluation of oneself., , DIMENSIONS OF SELF, 1. PERSONAL SELF– The personal self has those aspects which relate only to you . It, includes aspects like physical, emotional, mental, spiritual etc., , 1

SOCIAL SELF – The social self refers to those aspects where you are involved with others, and includes aspects like sharing, co-operation, support and unity., , SELF CONCEPT, Self concept is a description of oneself. It answers the question of ‘who am I’? It includes, our qualities, feelings and thoughts and what we are capable of doing., , SELF ESTEEM, Self esteem refers to our judgement of ourselves according to the standards we have set for, ourselves which are largely influenced by society. It is ones’s evaluation of oneself., , IDENTITY, Identity is the qualities, beliefs, personality, looks or expressions that make a person., Or, We can say it is the set of behavioural or personal characteristics by which an individual is, recognisable in a group. It is a sense of who we are which we carry throughout our lives., Or, Identity is the mental representation of who he/she is., , TYPES OF IDENTITY, 1. PERSONAL IDENTITY - Personal identity refers to those attributes of a person that make, her different from others. Like beauty, habits, emotions, career, personality, goals, beliefs,, interest, skills, values, principles, physical features etc., 2.
