260 ASIMPLE HISTORY OF ANCIENT INDIA, , title of Amitraghat i.e: slayer of the foes. He must have won this title by virtue, of his conquests but the details of those conquests are lacking., , A vague hint is given by the author of Arya-Manju-Mula-Kulpa and by, Hemchandra and Taranath who state, "that the apostle of violence, Chanakya,, outlived Chandra Gupta and continued to be a minister of Bindusara as one, of his great lords." Taranath states that Chanakya accomplished the destruction of the kings and ministers of sixteen towns and made Bindusara master, of all territory between the Easter and western sea. Due to these conquests his, empire extended upto the south. Some writers do not agree with this view., They hold the opinion that south India was subdued by Chandra Gupta and, Bindusara did not conquer any new area. Perhaps there occurred a few, rebellions which he had to quell., , The administration during his period was not very efficient. The people, did not like the administration of the ministers in the provinces. Once there, broke out a rebellion in Taxila. Prince Ashoka was sent to quell it. All the, people of Taxila came out and said, "We neither oppose the prince, nor the, king Bindusara but the wicked ministers who oppress us.", , Political Relations, , Bindusara was an able statesman.
