BA I Semester, Paper: 01 Political Theory, Unit 2, , Sir. Chanmiki War, , THE EVOLUTIONARY THEORY ON THE ORIGIN OF THE STATE, The evolutionary theory is also known as the historical theory or the correct theory of the origin of the state., This theory is based on the belief that the state is not a man made institution but it is the product of long, historical evolution covering many years and many factors contributed to the development of the state., These factors include kinship, religion, force, economic factors and political consciousness., 1) Kinship: kinship or blood relationships was the first and the strongest bond of social organization., It was kinship that created society and society developed into the state. The people in the primitive, society were united together by a common blood and it may be that oldest male or female members, of the tribes become the ruler, the others obey this ruler because of the blood relationship that was, the fundamental bond of union everywhere in the primitive society. Thus kinship no doubt, contributed to the origin and development of the state., 2) Religion: The religion also play an important part towards the growth and development of the, state. Natural phenomenon like flood, thunder, earthquake, storm, were believed to be the will, of God by the people in ancient times. They therefore sought remedies against them in worship of, God alone. Since everyone of them did not know the procedure for worship God, they authorized, somebody from among them to worship God on their behalf and made him their priest. The priest, in the course of time, turn into a ruler and thus the state came into existence., 3) Force: Force was another factor which has contributed to the origin of the state. Survival of the, fittest was a law in ancient times. Kingdoms were established and expanded through force and the, strong extended his authority over the weak by force. The heroes of the war were not only obeyed, during the war but also they were accepted as ruler in peace time., 4) Economic Factor: Economic factors like the growth of private property, agriculture greatly, influenced the growth of the state. With the increase in the necessaries of life and the beginning of, agriculture led to the idea of private property which was the source of many problems related to its, maintenance and protection. Under such conditions primitive people had to submit to certain, authority for the protection of their private property and regulation of mutual relations among them., Thus the economic factors, contributed to the origin of the state according to the advocates of the, historical theory., 5) Political Consciousness: Political consciousness can be describe as the awareness of common, purposes and ends to be realized through political organization. It may be a feeling among men that, they have certain aims and objectives which can be achieve under an organised authority. A, political conscious group of people might aspire to establish a state in order to maintain peace and, security in the country for the welfare and happiness of all human beings. Even today every nation, desires to establish a state. Thus desire and cooperation based on political consciousness might, contribute towards the origin of a state., From the above discussion it may be conclude that the origin of the state cannot assigned, to a particular factor. It has evolved gradually. Kinship, religion, force, economic factor and political, consciousness play an important role in combination with one another to the development of the state.
