Anton Chekhov, A professional doctor and the master of short stories, Anton Chekhov is celebrated as Russia's most famous and prized storyteller. He was one of the important figures who contributed to the beginning of modernism in theatre.Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born to poverty on January 29,1860 in Taganrog, a Russian mercantile city on the coast of the Black Sea. His mother was the daughter of a cloth merchant, his father was a grocer and his grandfather was a serf. The hunger and oppression that accompanied poverty incited peasant revolts.

Why is 'The Proposal ' considered as a one act play?, A one act play is a short play that focuses on a single scene and a single day that covers the happenings of a single act. Anton Chekhov's play "The Proposal" is a perfect example of a one-act play. This farcical play revolves around the story of Natalya Stepanovna and Ivan Vassilevitch Lomov and their relationship.

The Russian Gentry, A Marriage proposal is a one act farce. Ait is fast-paced play of dialogue-based action and situational humor. It takes place on a country estate in late 19th century Russia. The characters are members of the privileged class known as gentry. These wealthy landowners employed peasants to work their fields, which allowed them to enjoy a life of leisure. Writers of forces often poked fun at the habits of gentry,including their tendency to marmarry for money rather than love.

Lomov, Lomov is a hypochondriac who wants to get married for the sake of appearances. He doesn't seem to love Natalya but decides to marry her because she's the best woman available. He has difficulty coming to the point, which makes conversing with him difficult. Because of his tendency to digress, he becomes involved in silly arguments with Natalya and Chubukov about land ownership and dogs. What seems most important to him is maintaining a superior appearance, which is also true of the other two characters.

Natalia, Natalia is a strong-willed woman who is more effective than Lomov in speaking clearly and getting to the point. However, her will is focused on maintaining a superior appearance. As a result, she insists that Oxen Meadows belongs to her family and not to Lomov. She also argues that her dog is better than Lomov's dog. Yet, she feels the burden of being a potential if not actual spinster and, thus, desperately wants to marry Lomov. Despite this, her concern for being right about superficial matters takes precedence.

Chubukov, Chubukov seems happy about the potential marriage between Lomov and Natalya. However, he sees marriage in a mercenary way, referring to Lomov's proposal as a merchant buying goods. For him, the match is advantageous as a good business arrangement for both families. Whether Lomov and Natalya really love each other probably doesn't matter much. Despite his eagerness for the marriage to happen, Chubukov places greater value on maintaining a superior appearance. As a result, he gets embroiled in the inane arguments between Lomov and Natalya.

Setting, The present (1890s). The living room in Chubukov's Mansion in Russia. Chubukov's discovered as the curtain rises. Lomov, enters formally wearing a dress suit.

Introduction, Lomov wearing a formal dress enters the living room of the mention of chubukov, his neighbour and friend, Chubukov warmly accepts him, shakes hand, and offers a seat., Lomov told Chubukov that he wants to marry Chubukov's daughter Natalia., Chubukov expresses his happiness and told Lomov to wait and assures him that she will accept his proposal.

Rising action, When Natalia faces lomov, and lomov struggles to tell her what is his purpose and he wants to express it briefly. , They end up arguing about their property(Oxen Meadows) and lomov forget about his purpose., Chubukov enters and then tells him, upon the request of Natalia, that they owned the Oxen Meadows which caused the problem to rise., They drive for and called him with different names.

Falling action, Chubukov wanted the commotion to stop so that he helps lomov to remember his purpose on visiting their Mansion., As lomov remembers he struggles to think for his body and his heart are suffering from pain due to palpitation., Chubukov mimics his every word because of his irritation of forgetting his purpose and continues calling him with different names. They continue to argue as Lomov loses his consciousness.

Resolution, Natalia, seeing Lomov faint, thinks that he's dead and starts crying. Chubukov helps Lomov gain consciousness., As Lomov gains his consciousnes, Chubukov is desperate and wants the argument to stop so he told Lomovthat Natalia accepted his proposal., Lomov doesn't understand what's going on but he is happy and kisses Natalia's hand, they still argue about their dogs. Poor Chubukov wanted peace so he ask for champagne. (Trying to stop the couple from arguing again).
