The word scaffolding in education means the process of teaching. In this process, teachers make a prototype and explain to their students how they can solve the problems. After that, scaffolding teachers move back and let their students solve their problems. Teachers are there to guide them.
The word scaffolding is used here because over a period, in the teaching process, teachers’ guidance becomes less as students get new knowledge and progress.
Scaffolding in education means the support that teachers give to their students. Teachers work as an activator, and help students understand the concept and master it. When this support fades; that is scaffolding, the students will progress.
More or less, all teachers use this process to know what the student has learned, what he/she is expected to know and be able to move ahead further.
The main aim is to guide students to move progressively towards a better level of understanding, thus helping them attain greater independence in the learning process.
After much research, we found that scaffolding in education has two crucial aspects.
- The development level of a child,
- The potential development level of a child.
Every child is different. They have differences in the two levels. They need a different level of support and fading. To be successful, scaffolding in education should keep in mind the proximal zone of development.
