Parapsychology

Parapsychology is the study of psychic phenomena such as

  • Extrasensory perception
  • Telepathy
  • Precognition
  • Clairvoyance
  • Psychokinesis, also known as telekinesis
  • Psychometry, and so on.

Parapsychology also involves other paranormal claims, such as those that are related to near-death experiences, apparitional experiences, synchronicity, and similar unexplainable activities. Often criticized as being pseudoscience, the majority of mainstream scientists reject parapsychology as a branch of study itself. It has also been criticized by mainstream critics for a lot of its practitioners claiming that their studies are plausible despite the absence of any convincing evidence for the existence of any psychic phenomena after more than a century of research.

Parapsychology research hardly ever comes up in mainstream scientific journals. Most papers under this are published in a small number of niche journals. The scientific consensus is that there is not enough evidence to support the existence of such phenomena. Scientists are critical of this field and state that its extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence if they are to be taken seriously. Scientists who have been tasked with the evaluation of this field of study have written a complete body of evidence that is of poor quality and not controlled adequately. In support of this view, critics cite instances of flawed studies, cognitive biases like clustering illusion, confirmation bias, availability error, the illusion of control, the bias blind spot, and magical thinking, as a way of explaining parapsychological results. Research has also shown that the desire to believe in paranormal phenomena can cause people to discount strong evidence that it does not exist.
