Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation

Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation, shortened to CCE, was a process of assessment that was mandated by the RTI Act of India in 2009. This approach towards assessment was brought into effect by several state governments in India as well as by the Central Board of Secondary Education for students from sixth to tenth grades, sometimes even including XII Std in some schools. Among them, the smaller class students would have to face the exam of the board at a younger age.

The Karnataka government introduced continuous and comprehensive evaluation for classes one through nine and was later also introduced for XII standard students. The main aim of CCE was to evaluate all aspects of the child when they were present at the school. This was supposed to help reduce the pressure on the child during or before examinations as the student will need to sit for multiple tests all through the year, of which no syllabus covered or test conducted will be repeated at the end of the year. The CCE method was claimed to bring enormous changes from the traditional chalk and talk method of teaching provided it is implemented accurately.

As a part of this system, the marks of the students were replaced by grades that were evaluated using a series of curricular and extra-curricular evaluations with academics. The aim of CCE was to decrease the workload on the student by taking a number of small tests throughout the year instead of a single test at the end of the academic program. Grades were awarded to students based on their work experience skills, innovation, steadiness, dexterity, teamwork, public speaking, behavior, etc. as a means of evaluating and presenting an overall measure of the ability of the student. This helps the students who are not good at academics to show their talent in other fields like arts, sports, music, humanities, athletics, etc., and also helps in motivating the students who have a thirst for knowledge.

However, the CCE system was canceled in 2017 for students appearing in the Class 10 Board Exam, bringing back the compulsory Annual Board Exam and removing the Formative and Summative Assessments.
