Difference Between Accuracy and Precision

Accuracy and precision are the two terms whose meanings are misunderstood or the terms are used interchangeably. However, there is a difference between accuracy and precision. Both of these terms are yardsticks to measure how close a measurement is in comparison to the actual value. People believe that they mean the same thing and the terms can be used according to their convenience. First, understand the meaning of accuracy and precision, and then see the difference between these two terms.

Accuracy is the degree to which the result of a measurement conforms to the correct value. If the measurement taken is close to the assigned value, it is termed as being accurate. On the other hand, precision refers to the quality of being exact. If two or more measurements are close or closely related to each other, they are called to be precise.

The major difference between accuracy and precision is that both are used to show how close a measurement is to the actual value. Darts board is often used as an example to show the difference between these two terms. If you are hitting the board accurately, it means you are targeting the center of the board. Likewise, if you are hitting the board precisely, it means the targets are closed space. Understanding the difference between the two is crucial for better measurement.
