Department of higher education manages higher education in India. It is the department that is governed by the Ministry of Education. The concept of higher education originated in Europe in the Middle ages, and the first universities were established there.

Today, the nature of higher education worldwide is determined by the models established by influential countries like France, the United States, and Great Britain.

Higher education is also known as post-secondary education, tertiary education, or third-level education. Post-completion, the students pursuing the course are awarded an educational degree. A person can do a degree course, a diploma course, or a higher education certificate course.

Higher education is optional and is done after secondary education. The basic requirement to get admission in a higher education course is to complete secondary education. Also, the usual age to appear in the entrance exam is 18 years. 

The higher educational institutes include not only colleges or universities but also various professional schools. The professional schools are the ones what prepare a student in the field of medicine, business, law, etc.

The higher education department manages all such higher educational institutes and gives them proper guidelines regarding their functioning. It helps in avoiding confusion and ensures smooth and reasonable working.
