The concepts and inferences are given first to learners in the deductive method of teaching, followed by specific examples and activities to support learning. The deductive method of teaching is better for introductory-level courses that need a clear foundation from which to start with a new element of the language. Learners who are used to the more traditional method of learning and therefore lack the training to figure out the rules themselves may have difficulty with this method. In a deductive method of teaching, the process of learning a language begins with giving learners rules, then examples and exercises. It’s a teacher-centered approach to presenting new content. For instance, the form and usage of the third conditional are explained to learners, who then have a fill-in-the-blank exercise to complete, then prepare their examples. In the classroom deductive approach may be appropriate for lower-level learners who need a clear foundation to start with a new language element, or for learners who are already familiar with the language.
