Data Collection

Data collection is the process of bringing all the information on targeted variables into an established system, which then helps answer relevant questions and evaluates outcomes. It is a research component in all study fields, which includes physical and social sciences, humanities, and business. While methods vary from discipline to discipline, the emphasis is on making sure that accurate and honest collection remains the same.

The goal for this is to collect quality evidence that helps analysis lead to the formulation of credible and convincing answers to the questions posed. Data collection and subsequent validation consist of four steps when it comes to taking a census and seven steps when it comes to sampling.

Irrespective of the field of study or preference for defining quantitative or qualitative data, accurate data collection is quintessential to maintaining research integrity. The selection of appropriate data collection instruments and instructions for their correct use reduce the likelihood of errors.

A formal data collection process is required as it makes sure that the data gathered are both defined as well as accurate. These subsequent decisions based on arguments in the findings are made using valid data. The process offers both a baseline from which they can measure and in certain cases infer as an indication as to what to improve.

There are 5 common methods for collecting data:

  • Closed-ended surveys and quizzes
  • Open-ended surveys and questionnaires
  • 1-on-1 interviews
  • Focus groups
  • Direct observation
