CSIR NET Syllabus – Mathematical Science

The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) NET (National Eligibility Test) is conducted twice a year by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to select candidates for Junior Research Fellowships (JRFs). The exam is preliminary to check for the eligibility of candidates as lecturers in the Department of Science and Mathematics. Eligible candidates would be appointed in lecturer/assistant professor positions across Indian universities under the Faculty of Science & Technology.

The CSIR NET Syllabus is not an easy nut to crack, and candidates should develop a schematic as part of their preparation process to qualify for the examination. Understanding the syllabus will help candidates plan well with respect to the marking scheme and time allotment.

Subjects for CSIR UGC NET Examination

The CSIR UGC NET exam is conducted in these subjects:

1. Chemical Sciences

2. Earth Sciences

3. Life Sciences

4. Mathematical Sciences

5. Physical Science

The marking scheme for each subject will be different. Candidates are required to pick their subject specialty and prepare for the same. This article will focus on the CSIR NET Syllabus for students taking Mathematical Sciences as their examination subject.

While mathematics is a vast subject that comprises logic as a means to reach a conclusion, and some students have a natural flair for it, having the syllabus in hand could be of great help for preparing for the exam. Hence, we have provided the CSIR NET Syllabus for the Mathematical Science subject here.

CSIR NET Syllabus Structure of Mathematical Science

As per the CSIR UGC NET December 2019 syllabus, the last revision in the exam pattern, it will be a single paper that constitutes multiple-choice questions (MCQs) posed in English and Hindi. These MCQs are divided into Part A, Part B, and Part C, which carry 200 marks and are to be attempted in 3 hours.

  • Part A is common for all subjects. It consists of 20 questions covering the basic concepts of quantitative reasoning and analysis, general science, and research aptitude. Candidates must answer 15 of the questions. Every correct answer carries 2 marks, and for every incorrect answer, 0.5 mark is deducted. Candidates can be awarded a maximum of 30 marks in Part A.
  • Part B of the CSIR NET Syllabus constitutes 40 MCQs pertaining to the topics of the Mathematical Sciences syllabus. Candidates are required to answer a maximum of 25 questions. Every correct answer carries 3 marks, and for every incorrect answer, 0.75 mark is deducted. Candidates can score a maximum of 75 marks in Part A.
  • Part C of the CSIR NET Syllabus includes a total of 60 MCQs about the scientific concepts or applications of the Mathematical Sciences syllabus. These questions test the analytical and scientific knowledge of candidates, who are required to answer a maximum of 20 questions. Every correct answer (answer that identifies all the correct choices) carries 4.75 marks, and for every incorrect answer or partially correct answer, no marks are deducted. No marks will be allocated for a partially correct answer, either. Candidates can be awarded a maximum of 95 marks in Part A.
