Technology literacy or technological literacy refers to the ability to use, manage, understand and assess technology. It also refers to digital literacy where the user has the skills needed to use digital devices such as computers or smartphones to access the internet. The user may use the internet to discover, create, manage, review, and evaluate data using a set of digital platforms, including web pages, magazines, websites, social media websites, among others.
An individual can use these digital platforms and interfaces to communicate, troubleshoot, and solve academic problems and non-academic issues. This literacy also refers to the familiarity of an individual with digital devices and their usage/purpose, which has proven to be an essential skill in modern times.
Presently, in schools, technology literacy is a huge part of the curriculum. In schools, technology literacy mainly focuses on the student’s use of technology to effectively solve problems. It enables exposure to a vast variety of topics, sparks creativity, and promotes active learning.
In the education sector, this literacy is not necessarily about whether students know about it, but what they can do with the same. For example, a student may not be expected to know how the internet functions, rather how to use the internet to solve their assignment and learn something new in the process.
