PRT- All You Need to Know

PRT stands for Primary Teacher. The role of a PRT is to teach the students of primary level, i.e., to students below the fifth grade. A candidate who wishes to become a PRT should meet the qualification criteria for appearing in the PRT exam and then pass the PRT exam.

Any individual who wishes to become a PRT teacher must possess a two-year Diploma in Elementary Education. These four semesters of teaching and training will prepare a candidate to be eligible to teach for elementary education. Once a candidate completes the required education, they will be eligible to take annual teaching eligibility tests conducted across India. Based on these PRT exam results, the candidates will be appointed as teachers for primary students.

PRT Exam Pattern

To be qualified in the PRT exam, a candidate must qualify the two stages of the test that are:

  1. Written Test
  2. Interview

In India, the following authorities are permitted to conduct the PRT test. They are:

  1. CTET by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
  2. KVS PRT by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan.
  3. NVS PRT by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti.
  4. DSSSB PRT by the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board.

All of these PRT tests are similar in their objective but possess slight changes in terms of the exam pattern and syllabus.

PRT Exam Eligibility Criteria

Age

Any candidate who wishes to apply and become a PRT must be below the age of 30 with an age relaxation of:

  1. 5 years for SC/ST.
  2. 3 years for OBC.
  3. 10 years for women of all categories.

Educational Qualification

1. The candidates must have completed their Senior Secondary or any equivalent course with a minimum pass percentage of 50.

2. Applicants should also complete any one of the following teaching courses:

  1. Two-year Diploma in Elementary Education 
  1. Four-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B. El. Ed.)
  2. Two-year Diploma in Education under Special Education
  3. Graduation along with Bachelor of Education (B.Ed)

Along with their degrees, it is specified by the PRT conducting board that the candidates must also complete their teacher training course. It is because of the following reasons:

  1. In today’s age, children are in a highly competitive environment. Hence, it is important that we need professionally trained teachers who are not just full of academic skills but also possess the ability to care for the all-round well-being of a child.
  2. The elementary training courses often include new-age teaching techniques and education in computer training that will help the teachers teach the child to face the 21st-century classroom confidently.

Number of Attempts

The candidates can attempt the test any number of times as long as they fulfill all the other criteria. There is no limit to the no. of attempts.

Important Points About the Exam

  1. The PRT Exam is conducted for a period of 2 hours 30 minutes.
  2. The test is conducted in offline mode.
  3. There is no negative marking for wrong and unattempted answers.
  4. Each correct answer carries one mark.
  5. There are a total of 150 questions in the test.
  6. The maximum no of marks that can be scored is 150.
