What is PRT?
PRT is short for a Primary Teacher. A PRT exam is conducted every year in most states of India to choose eligible candidates for the position of primary class teachers in state government schools. These teachers are mainly recruited to teach classes from 1 to 5. Once the aspirants pass the test, they can work as a primary class teacher in any government school.

What are the Eligibility Criteria for PRT Exams?
Various PRT exams are conducted by different institutions every year. So, certain aspects like eligibility criteria, PRT exam duration, syllabus, etc., might slightly vary. Given below are the general educational eligibility criteria that every candidate should meet:
- The maximum age at which you can attend the PRT exam is 30.
- The aspirants should have cleared their senior secondary school education with at least 50% marks or equivalent.
- Candidates must have attended the CTET ( Central Teacher Eligibility Test) organized by CBSE as per the guidelines framed by NCTE.
- The contenders need to be fluent in both English and Hindi languages so that they can teach in both mediums.
What are Some of the Main PRT Exams?
As mentioned earlier, PRT exams are conducted by various institutions every year. Here are some of the main exams:
- KVS PRT Exams: KVS or Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan supervises around 1235 schools across India and is managed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. KVS conducts PGT exams every year for aspiring candidates.
- UPSESSB PRT Exam: This is the official board of UP responsible for organizing PRT exams every year in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
- DSSSB PRT Exam: Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board organizes PRT tests every year for recruiting candidates to various primary schools in Delhi.
- Chandigarh PRT Exam: Chandigarh PRT exams are organized every year by the Chandigarh Education Department (CED).
- NVS PRT Exam: Supervised by Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samit runs many schools in various parts of the country. This organization also conducts various recruitment exams like PGT and PRT to select eligible candidates for the teaching positions.
- HSSC PRT Exam: The government of Haryana also organizes PRT exams every year, which are supervised by the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC).
PRT Exam Duration
KVS PRT Exam Duration
KVS PRT exam is a written exam that is conducted in offline mode. The KVS PRT exam duration is 120 minutes or 2 hours. In this 120 minutes exam duration, the PRT candidates are supposed to answer 120 questions which will be in the MCQ (multiple choice question) format. Every right answer will be awarded a mark each, and so the total mark of the exam will be 120.
DSSSB PRT Exam Duration
The DSSSB exam is also a written PRT test which is now conducted in the online mode. The PRT exam duration will be 2 hours. The candidates will be given 200 multiple-choice questions that have to be completed within the said duration. The exam will be divided into Part A and Part B; 100 MCQs for each part. Each question will carry 1 mark. The DSSSB PRT exam has a negative marking scheme for incorrect answers. 0.25 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer.
UPSESSB PRT Exam
The UP PRT exam is conducted as a written test every year in the offline mode. There will be two different time duration for this PRT exam as it has two papers. Paper 1 is for general subjects like Hindi, English, Maths, Science, Reasoning, and GK, while Paper 2 is for Teaching Skills and Essay. This PRT exam duration is 2.5 hours in total. The time duration for Paper 1 will be 1.5 hours, and Paper 2 will be 1 hour. There will be a total of 150 MCQs, 100 for Paper 1 and 50 for Paper 2.
What is the Mode of Application for the PRT Exams?
The mode of application is online for the majority of the PRT exams. You can apply online through the official website of the institution conducting the exam.
