Extracurricular Activities

“Creativity is as important now in education as literacy and we should treat it with the same status,” said Ken Robinson, a best-selling author. The importance of extracurricular activities cannot be stressed enough. Students should get a break from the monotonous routine and now, more than ever, they must have a window of opportunity to engage in extracurricular activities and destress themselves. Extracurricular activities have proven to be stress busters and this will in turn help in better academic performance.

This break comes in the form of extracurricular activities in a student’s life. They play a significant role in a student’s personality development. Not only do they break the chain of hectic and exhausting schedule and classes but also proves to be an opportunity to showcase and polish their skills and creativity. Students get a break from their studies and these activities prove to be a great recreational getaway to them.

But as we advance towards new heights of development and becoming better, it has been observed that we are left with no time to spare for any recreational activities. With the growing competition in the world, there has been a significant increase in stress levels of students of the present generation.  This makes organizing extracurricular activities extremely essential to keep the increasing stress level in check.

Various studies and surveys conducted by different agencies and universities threw light on the importance of extracurricular activities for students. The education system slowly began to realize and implement policies to promote extracurricular activities in school for students’ overall development in the past few years. This was an important decision but honestly, it never reached its true potential where it should have and there is still a lot to do in this field. Recently all the activities including the extracurricular were left stranded when the nation went into an abrupt lockdown.

They empowered students and this marked the rise of online education in the education ecosystem. Students got back on their academic path but as mentioned earlier “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”, it was not enough to resume online classes only. Due to schools being closed all other activities were left uncompleted.

According to a recent survey it has been found that students and employees feel  overworked when studying or working from home. This further makes us realize the importance of activities other than work. But remember when “life gives you lemon you make lemonade”. So instead of feeling helpless and crib about it, we should make the best use of resources available to us.

Let us discover how extracurricular activities can lift your mood:

• It is true that differences grew among the students due to the lack of constant interaction with each other but in these challenging times technology has tried to bring us close and now when most of the students have used smartphone screens, they should be utilized to conduct different extracurricular activities. Video conferencing apps can be put into action for this purpose.

• Online teaching apps not only let you conduct online classes nowadays. Apart from providing  Online education to students, some of these apps now also feature different extracurricular activities and let students participate in extracurricular activities.

• Since we spend most of our time behind a laptop or phone these days, there is an ample number of educational and creative websites which organize webinars and workshops which let you learn new skills while making sure you enjoy it too. They prove to be very helpful in learning and practicing new skills.

• Now when the number of cases is gradually decreasing and as we are returning to normalcy, extracurricular activities such as games and sports could be organized with necessary precautions and limiting the number of participants along with social distancing would certainly be better for students who have been restricted to their room for so long.

Extracurricular activities provide opportunities for students to shine in fields that are not associated directly with their syllabus and academics. These activities encourage students,  instill confidence and eliminate any self-doubts. Participating in extracurricular activities leads to increased socialization and eventually better communication skills.
