E Campus is another term used to refer to a virtual campus. It refers to the online offerings of a school, college, or university where the work is done either partially or completely online, often with the assistance of the professor, teacher, or teaching assistant. With online education here to stay, many colleges, schools, and universities now offer entire degree programs, either partially or completely in an online format. There are at least 4,500 such institutions today with a total number of enrollments reaching almost 2 million, rising every day.
The majority of students making use of e campus services today to obtain online degrees are adults students for three main reasons:
- Flexibility – Adults with full-time jobs and families to take care of would find it rather difficult to attend daily classes in a traditional school setting. Online classes help them work at their own pace and work their classes into their busy lives.
- Cost – The cost of an online degree is much cheaper than in a traditional college setting. Obtaining the degree online eliminates further costs like classroom costs and facility upkeep costs that traditional students will have to pay because they are using the campus. However, just because the degree is cheaper does not mean that there is any depreciation in the value of the degree.
- Broad Choices – They can stay at home and gain availability to degrees that might not be offered by colleges or universities in the local vicinity.
Schools make use of a variety of tools for conducting classes – generally called learning management systems (LMS) or course management systems (CMS). These may also be referred to as Content Management Systems.
