The term Co-education refers to an education practice wherein both common genders study together. Along with education, students also receive moral and physical values under this setup. It allows them to grow together. By studying in a co-ed environment, students also interact with the opposite sex without feeling superior or inferior. It also boosts their self-confidence and improves their emotional intelligence. It fosters learning and growth.
Up until the 19th century, single-sex education was the norm. Most of the schools of the time were boy-schools. As women were not considered equal to men, they weren’t formally educated. The first place to have separate schools for girls was Rome. With time though, co-education started becoming common in various cultures across the world. Scottish opened the first co-education school in Scotland in 1818.
In this era where people are educated to see all genders alike, co-education is not seen as something special or different, it is normal. Students who study in a co-education setup find it easier to adapt to different environments. That is why they tend to be open to newer ideas. Like every concept and practice, this one also has received criticism and blames however, it is a well accepted mode of education where students can learn to be more inclusive and can get more exposure.
