Bilingual Education

The term bilingual education refers to the teaching of the academic content in two languages, in a native and second language. The amount of usage of each language is variable depending on the outcome goal of the model. The basic goal of bilingual education is to enable English language learners to become competent in speaking, reading, listening, and writing in the English language. It is done through the development of literacy and academic skills in the primary language and English. Important cognitive skills are developed by this type of education like critical thinking, problem solving, logic, performance management and creativity. It is because it exercises your brain and forces you to think about how you can express and efficiently present your thoughts with the vocabulary you have in each language. There are three types of bilingual education. The three types are monolingual forms for bilinguals, weak forms for bilinguals, and strong forms for bilingualism and biliteracy. Students will benefit from this as they are educated in two languages. Being bilingual opens up more education and career opportunities. Students who are fluent in the second language can choose to work or study in another country.

Learning a language is a great way to keep your brain healthy and sharp. Being bilingual will increase student’s multitasking skills, attention control, creativity, and problem-solving. It promotes outside-the-box thinking.
