Associate Degree

An associate degree is a program that is undertaken by a student at the undergraduate level. The aim of an associate degree is to give the students a basic understanding, technical prowess, and transferable skills that they might need to get employed in the field that they have chosen for themselves.

Associate degrees are generally offered in the US, but they can also be found in certain universities in Hong Kong, Canada, the Netherlands, and Australia. There are certain degrees in other countries that are similar to an associate degree but go by different names. For example, in the UK, there is a degree similar to this one, but it is called a foundation degree.

Associate degrees are available in different types of schools and colleges, such as technical colleges, junior colleges, community colleges, etc. A student will require approximately 2 years to complete this degree.

There are 4 types of associate degrees –

  • AAA – Associate of Applied Arts
  • AA – Associate of Arts
  • AAS – Associate of Applied Science
  • AS – Associate of Science

The main difference between applied courses and regular courses is that the latter is more focused on a particular career or vocational skill while the former is for students who want to use the associate degree to secure a seat in an associated degree program seat which will require a lot more knowledge in the subject.

Online associate degrees are becoming more and more popular, because of the flexibility that they can provide as well as the reduced cost. This allows the students to work while they pursue their degrees. Most students who take up associate degrees work and study part-time, so the extra flexibility can help them immensely.
