The festival, known as Gai Jatra,, is generally celebrated in the Nepalese month of Bhadra (August-September). The present form, of Gai Jatra is a blending of antiquity and medievalism., According to tradition, every family which has lost a relative during the past year must, participate in a procession through the streets of Kathmandu leading a cow., The story goes that king Pratap Malla lost his son, and his queen was heartbroken.
