ABOUT THE POET., , • William H. Davies (1871-1940) was a Welsh poet and, writer.He spent significant part of his life as a tramp or, hobo in the United Kingdom and the United States. He, become a peddlar and street singer in England. After, several years of a wandering life, he published his first, volume ,"The Soul's Destroyer and other Poems".

ABOUT THE POEM., The present poem tells us about the rich man who wants to be a, poor man to find the real happiness. It when we do not have, money or have lost our money , we realize how important the, money is . At the end , poet says that now he dosen't have money,, he has true friends though they may be few. In short, 'Money' is, the most important thing in the world,but poet does not accept, this view. In other words ,Money does not mean everything in life., It is the only medium to purchase our needs , but one can not buy, a happiness, it is in heart.One can earn money but can not, happyness and satisfaction.

MONEY, When I had money , money , O !, I knew no joy till I went poor ;, For many a false man as a friend, Came knocking all day at my door., Then felt I like a child that holds, A trumpet that he must not blow, Because a man is dead ; I dared, Not speak to let this false world know.

Much have I thought of life , and seen, How poor men's hearts are ever light ;, And how their wives do hum like bees, About their work from morn till night., So, when I hear these poor ones laugh,, And see the rich ones coldly frown, Poor men,think I, need not go up, So much as rich men should come down.

GLOSSARY, Peddler - pedlar., Trumpet - a brass musical instrument, Hum - sing with closed lips., Tramp - the street in search of work., Hobo - migrant worker, Frown - to wrinkle brows.

In the first stanza , poet depicts at the beginning of the, poem money had no happiness when he had money. He had, to keep it hidden from those people who pretended to be his, friends.Who come knocking all the day to his door.

In the second stanza , poet compares his expirence to a child, who has given a trumpet but he could not blow it. Because, there has been a death , he was afraid of being cheated by, those who called themselves his friends.

In the third stanza , poet says that I have tried to, experience the real meaning of life from at that time.Poet, watched those who do not value (excess) the money are, light hearted and their life is satisified and happy., Womens in poor family , are also happy and satisified with, their work as morning to night.

In the fourth stanza , poet depicts that poor men are, able to laugh easily while the rich are worried. It is suggest, us, the poet wander that it is the rich who should, experience poverty and not the poor who should become, rich.In other words rich men should come down for, happiness and satisfaction.

In the the fifth and the last stanza , poet (Narrator), again emphasis that when he was rich , the people who, claimed tobe friends were actually false .But now he has, no money ; he has real friends who are few.

Happyness is not depend on, the money.The rich man who wants to be a poor man to find the real, happiness.In other words when we do not have money ,we realize the, how important the money is.But it dos'nt mean lack of money is lack of, happiness.Money is effect on behaviour of human life, the poet, compares the happiness in the life of rich and poor man.And lastly poet, suggest us happiness is not depend on the richness.

• The poem has five stanzas,each stanza has four lines. The language of, poem is simple but rich in poetic devices.There are seven or eight syllable, lines . The rhyme scheme and lend rhythm.Poet uses simile , Repitition ,, and Anitithesis for the effective understanding. Which is stresses on the, way man gives money too much value when it actually takes away our, happiness., •, The present poem gives us one message money does not bring, happiness and satisfaction.The poor person is happy and satisified whlie, rich person are worried and dissatisified. It means happiness and, satisfaction is not only depend on money , money is the only a medium, to purchase our needs but happiness and satisfaction is in the heart., •, Money can be stolen but happiness and satisfaction can not be, stolen.One can earn money but not satisfaction.
