PHYLUM – COELENTERATA, , 9., , General characters, •, •, •, •, •, •, •, •, •, •, •, •, •, •, •, •, •, •, , These are multicellular animals with tissue and organ system., Most of these animals are marine while few are found in fresh water., These are found in two forms i.e. polyp & medusa., Tubular form or cylindrical form, it is called polyp or hydranth., Umbrella form is called medusa or blast style., The hydranths are nutritive in function called gastrozooids., The medusa are reproductive in function called gonozooids., The body is radially symmetrical and diploblastic., The body having single cup like cavity, it is called coelenterons or gastro vascular cavity., These animals having single opening called mouth but anus is absent., The mouth is surrounded by many tentacles,tentacles having stinging cells or nematoblast, cells; there are an organ of defense and offence., The nervous system is made up of nerve cells., Reproduction occurs by asexual or sexual methods., Asexual reproduction occurs by simple vegetative reproduction by budding while sexual, reproduction occurs by producing male and female gametes., Phylum Coelenterata have been divided in to three classes namely, Class-Hydrozoa, Class –Scyphozoa, Class- Anthozoa, , PHYLUM - COLENTERATA, , CLASS - HYDROZOA, Polyp form is predominant., Gastrovascular cavityis do, not divide., Ex. Obelia, physalia., , CLASS - SCYPHOZOA, Medusa form is, predominant., Gastrovascular cavityis is, divided into 4 chembers., Ex. Aurelia., , CLASS - ANTHOZOA, Only polyp form is present., Gastrovascular cavityis is, divided into many, chembers., Ex. - Metridium,, Tubiphora., .
