TOO DEER, Too dear was a short story written by Leo Tolstoy. This story is a parody one of the modern, systems of government. The narrator begins the location of Monaco. It was located near the, borders of France and Italy on the shore of Mediterranean sea. It was a tiny Kingdom about, 7,000 people. There was a real king. He had a palace,courtiers ,ministers, Bishop ,general and, an army of 60 men.Taxes were the major sources of King's income. They were imposed on, tobacco, wine, spirits and poll tax. It was very difficult for him to manage his Kingdom without, proper revenue. So he thought of special source of revenue. It came from gaming house. In, this gaming house people play Roulette. The keeper of the gaming house gets a percentage, and large sum paid to the prince. German sovereigns had forbidden the gaming houses., Because it harmed to the people. So Monaco had remained with a Monopoly of the gaming, business and it was the only gambling establishment left in entire Europe., People of Monaco were peaceable. Once a murder was committed. Such a thing had not, happened before. The criminal was awarded death sentence. So the court ordered to cut off, the head of the criminal. But Monaco had neither a guillotine nor an executioner. The, committee inquired French Government and Italian government to supply both. They both, agree to supply French demanded 16000 France and Italy demanded 12000 Francs. The, king of Monaco thought it over, it was too dear. He did not want to spend much money on the, criminal. Even his soldiers refused to cut a man's head off. They said that we didn't know how to, do it. In order to reduce the cost, the death sentence was changed into life imprisonment., The kinglet put the criminal in a small lock up as they had no strong prison. The guard was, appointed to watch over the criminal and fetched the criminal's food from the palace kitchen., After a year the king noticed a new item of expenditure that's keeping of the criminal and 600, Francs were spent. The matter was serious since the criminal was young and healthy he might, live for another 50 years. So the committee suggested to dismiss the guard, which would, provoke him to run away. But he refused to go away. Instead of going away, he himself do, guard's duty. He said that he had nowhere to go. He could not do anything as they had ruined, his character. The people would turn their backs on him. They had treated me badly. At last he, offered a pension., The sun was fixed that 600 Francs annuity. He receive one third of his annuity and left, Monaco. He emigrated and settled just across the Frontier. It was not far 15 minutes by rail. He, purchased a bit of land and started market gardening.He lived comfortably and well. He would, always go to draw his pension on time. After receiving it, he would go to gaming house. Steak, two or three Francs. Then he would return home. He lived happily and peacefully., ---END---
