The Gardener, This was a short story. Author tells us human meanness, greed, human suffering, human, nature, complexity and confusion. The story explains the strained relations of rivals and, human nature with their strength and weakness. The old man becomes a gardener in the, narrator's plantation. His arrival brought changes in the lifestyle of the owner. His wife was, confused to decide whether the old man's arrival was for the better or for the worse. Her, husband's wealth and social prestige had risen higher. The old man knew about her plight., There are two stories in this story. The first is narrated by the author and the second story by, Tammanna., Tammanna and Basavaiah were rivals. If Tammanna bought four acres of land,, Basavaiah would also do the same. Initially it was healthy competition. Their rivalry rose to, high pitch and there was no land left to buy. All land belongs to either Tammanna or, Basavaiah. Tammanna had 1000 acres and Basavaiah had 800 acres. Basavaiah could not, tolerate it and asked him to sell 200 acres but Tammanna refused it. Tammanna offered to, buy all his land. Basavaiah became angry. Basavaiah forcibly encroached on Tammanna's, 200 acres land and fenced it. Tammanna's advisers told him to go to the court of law, or to, give a complaint to the police or use muscle power. But Tammanna was insearch of a, method that could destroy him completely. He composed the ballads and sang them in, public about Basavaiah's cruelty and his meanness. Basavaiah became desperate and, angry and went on encroaching Tammanna's land. He got palatial mansion that used gold,, diamond and precious stones but his house looked dull and empty because Tammanna's, books were not there. Therefore Basavaiah invites scholers, poets and musicians to his, palace. Basavaiah felt humiliated that's why Basavaiah invited scholars, poets and, musicians to his inaugural function., One day Basavaiah came to know that Tammanna was ill.At that point he found, means of surpassing him.Tammanna's disease was Basavaiah's health. But Tammanna, thought of 'death' himself to punish Basavaiah.Tammanna believed body level rivalry was, the right work. If he dies, Basavaiah can do anything to defeat him. Tammanna gave up, everything and ran away. Then Basavaiah also died because he had no reason to live when, Tammanna was not there. He referred to his story about Russia and America's cold, war.Here the old man is Tammanna.He forgot all his songs and ballads, after Basavaiah's, death., Thus Tammanna avenged himself and says man is so complicated that the day of his, death, man lives for some kind of vengefulness., The end
