The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology is one of the premier institutions in India for the pursuit of excellence in space science<\/a>. It is most commonly referred to by its more popular abbreviation the IIST.\u00a0 The Institution is situated at Valiamala, Nedumangad, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology is the first university in the continent of Asia to be dedicated only to the study and research of space. It was inaugurated on the 14th of September 2007 by the then Chairman of the Indian Space Research Institute (ISRO) G. Madhavan Nair. The IIST was set up by ISRO under the Department of Space, Government of India with the late former president of India A. P. J. Abdul Kalam being the Chancellor. The institution provides regular engineering UG, PG and doctorate programmes<\/a> that focus on space science, technology and its myriad applications.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At its inception, the institute started functioning at the ATF Campus, under Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Kerala. Modern environmentally friendly buildings of unique architecture merge well with the thickly wooded campus of 100 acres situated on the foothills of Sahyadri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A residential campus was built near Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre in Valiamala, Nedumangad, Thiruvananthapuram. It was inaugurated by former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on the 25th of August 2009. IIST started functioning in its new campus on the 15th of August 2010. It has an extension in the Ponmudi Hills, Thiruvananthapuram, for an observatory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
