As it is an illustrative tool, concept maps are used by graphic designers, architects, technical writers, and others, to structure and organise knowledge.

These maps usually represent information and ideas in the form of boxes or circles. They are further connected with labeled arrows in a downward branching structure that is hierarchical. Linking phrases like ‘requires,’ ‘causes,’ or ‘contributes to,’ are used to articulate the relationship between concepts. Concept maps were developed to increase consequent learning. Teachers use these maps to convey the concepts in a better manner. More often than not, this is included in the lesson plan to ensure better understanding.

Just like a sentence diagram representing the diagram of a sentence, a concept map represents relationships between ideas, words, and images. Every phrase or word in a concept map connects to another while linking back to the original clause or idea. This visual organizer is used to help students to understand a concept.

Concept Mapping was developed in the 1970s by Joseph D. Novak. It is the technique of visualising the relationship between different concepts. Although concept mapping is similar to mind mapping and brainstorming, unlike the latter procedures, concept mapping also defines how the illustrated components relate to each other.

That is why a concept map is more structured and layered than its counterparts and helps in flexible learning. Apart from invigorating the generation of ideas, a concept map is also used to take notes, improve language ability, retain knowledge, and more. These are also believed to aid creativity.

Teachmint’s school LMS is all you need to simplify your tasks.
