Comparing PGT and TGT

TGTs are suitable for teaching up to the 10th class. To become a qualified teacher, one must have a B. Ed, which is also a two-year professional course. Courses are offered full-time in most governments as well as in private institutions.

Candidates can choose their subjects according to their interests in the B.Ed, such as Art, Science and Commerce. The first step of the admission process is an entrance test. Prior to applying for an entrance examination, a candidate must have completed a degree in any stream from the Institute or University recognized by the UGC.

TGT is a qualified teacher with a graduation degree from a recognized university with 50% or more marks and a B.Ed degree. In contrast, the PGT exam churns out qualified teachers with at least 50% total marks in post-graduation.

TGT is suitable for teaching up to 10th grade, and PGT is suitable for teaching up to 12th grade. The exams are organized by the Central Board Of Secondary Education and are mandatory for both TGT and PGT teachers.

For PGT, Students must have a Post-Graduation Degree in the relevant subject. On the other hand, TGT Students must have a degree in the relevant subject and a B.Ed / BTC or any other training certificate.

Eligibility Criteria for PGT

Eligibility for PGT is determined by the UPSESSB. It is very important that people who want to appear in the PGT know the eligibility criteria and fulfill them. If candidates do not meet the eligibility criteria, they cannot appear for the PGT Exam. The PGT eligibility criteria are defined under the following categories – nationality, age limit, and educational qualifications.

Nationality: Applicants for the PGT Exam must be Indian citizens.

Age Limit: The Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education Service Selection Board has defined only the minimum age limit for the 21-year PGT exam. Candidates must check age-specific information from the full official notification.

Education: The following qualifications must be met by candidates to qualify for the PGT Examination:

  • All applicants must have completed their higher education as this carries 5% of the weight of the marks allocated to the job.
  • M.A. in English / Physics / Hindi / Chemistry / Mathematics / Economics / History / Geography / Commerce / Biology / Physics and other relevant subjects included in the space provided.
  • B.Ed or M.Ed qualifications are mandatory for all candidates currently applying.

Number of Attempts: There is no limit to the number of attempts. Students can appear in the  PGT exams as often as they wish as long as they satisfy the eligibility criteria mentioned above.
