Teaching is considered one of the noblest jobs in the world. It is one of the most valued professions as it helps shape the minds of students. Like most professions, teaching, particularly for primary or secondary classes, has its own degree requirement. B.Ed, short for Bachelor in Education, is an undergraduate course that people pursue a career in teaching.

B.Ed is a two-year course that the NCTE has made compulsory for all teaching aspirants. No further degree is mandatory for someone to land a teaching job in India. Candidates can pursue B.Ed through distance learning and in-class teaching. 

According to Human Resource Ministry (HRD), the teaching sector generates around three lakh vacancies per year. Needless to say, the future of teaching jobs is bright.  

B.Ed Eligibility

A candidate must meet the following criteria to be eligible for a B.Ed admission:

  1. Hold a graduate degree in any discipline.
  2. Secure at least 50-55% in their graduation. B.Tech graduates need a minimum of 55%.
  3. Candidates belonging to minority groups like SC/ST/OBC must score at least 50%.
  4. Must pass the entrance exam.

Admission and Entrance Exams

To get admission to a college for B.Ed, candidates must pass some entrance exams. Different universities conduct different exams. All colleges have a standard procedure. First, there is an application form that needs to be filled. Make sure that you attach the application form with all the necessary documents. Once the application form is submitted, you will have to take the entrance exam. If you pass the test, your name will appear on the merit list issued by a college. 

There is no central entrance exam to get into a B.Ed program. Some of the reputed colleges have their personal entrance exams. The marks scored in their specific exams are considered at the time of admission. However, there are some well-known entrance exams that most of the universities are affiliated with:

RIE CEE

NCERT conducts the Regional Institutes of Education (RIE) Common Entrance Examination (CEE). It is held for regional institutes for four states. The test is a pen-and-paper one that will take place on 18th July this year. For the general category, the fee is Rs 900. For reserved category, it is Rs 450. The exam spans 120 minutes.

CUCET

CUCET is a national test conducted by 14 universities. These central universities use this test for admissions in B.Ed programs and PhD courses. It is a two-hour test. The fee is Rs 800 for non-special category people and Rs 350 for other reserved categories.

DU B.Ed 21

DU B.Ed is a test conducted by Delhi University for admissions in B.Ed courses. It is a two-hour test with 100 multiple-choice questions. There are three sections from which the questions are asked in this test – English, Reasoning, and General Awareness. The test is taken to assess your knowledge in all the fields. The fee is Rs 500 for general candidates and Rs 250 for other reserved categories.

BHU UET

Banaras Hindu University also conducts its own entrance test. This test is held online. It is for two hours and 30 minutes. The fee for this test is Rs 400 for general candidates and Rs 200 for SC/ST.

 B.Ed syllabus

The B.Ed curriculum is designed in a way that helps candidates to not only complete the school syllabus, but also to understand the aptitude of students they are teaching. The curriculum is constantly changing and improving. 

The B.Ed course is divided into four semesters. Each semester is six months long.

NCERT curates the curriculum, according to guidelines in NCTE 2014. The curriculum is updated frequently to prepare candidates for the changing syllabi of schools and colleges. There are different specializations in this course. For example, a person can specialize in Biology, Maths, Hindi or any other subject.

Each semester covers 8 to 9 subjects, ranging from children’s growth, field trip activities, school exposure, Indian history, specialized subjects and much more. Candidates will have to understand each subject thoroughly. However, the subjects curated have only one objective: Making a candidate ready for real-life challenges.
